Comments (21)Another shot of a black pine I am excited about: Pinus thunbergii 'Emery's Dwarf'. Not a miniature per say, but looks like it's a 2-3" a year guy and VERY dense. A lotta buds! Looks like it may have come from down under? Anyone know more to it's discovery? Thanks! -Will...See MorePinus thunbergii for zone 8?
Comments (12)I have a Pinus thunbergii 40ft tall. My neighbor had one about 12 ft. tall that a borer killed. It went in just above ground level. Mine is OK...so far. I may saw it down before one of the two leaders starting at about 20 ft. splits off and falls where I don't want it to fall. If one half goes the other half is sure to follow. I'm not particularly thrilled with it anyway, because of it's dull green color. Austrian black pines are much better looking, especially trimmed niwaki style. Comments (1)One thing you'll need to watch for is that Pinus thunbergii is very susceptible to Pine Wilt Nematode (Bursaphelenchus). This nematode is native to North America and the native species resist it, but European and Asian pines are susceptible. The disease tends to strike when the trees are 20-30 years old (large enough to interest the longhorn beetles that spread the disease). So you'd do better with TX native pines, though the alkaline soil may be a problem for them. Also worth thinking about some of the pines from northeast Mexico, as many of them grow on lime-based soils, species like P. teocote, P. greggii, P. montezumae. Try checking nurseries that deal in Mexican plants (Yucca-do Nursery near Houston at least used to have some of them). Comments (8)Hi Moonchinka I could only post 1 picture so it was the one with the white fluff I opted for. I don't think it's mealy bug because the appearance and distribution of the white fluff is very regular in shape and place. I've come across them on other things before. I was wondering about a fungus infection? Here's another image that should show the browning of the needles. I have been concerned that the whole tree looks less green than before. As I said, I haven't actively been watering the tree since it's been a wet winter. I've even tilted the tree's bowl to help with drainage. I don't have a green house to over-winter and I don't believe stagnant indoors air circulation is good for the plant. So what else might I be able to do please if water is the problem? Thanks for your opinion....See Moreken_adrian Adrian MI cold Z5
