It depends somwhat on the painting so could you share that at least as to what style it is for sure.Because that firebox is so tall IMO that is not where I would hang a pice of art. Art really should be hung where it is possible to have the center of the piece at 60-65” from the floor.

Beautiful place! I suggest an approximately 45 x 45 square piece of art (that includes the frame).

The painting will be of the barns behind the old farmhouse we moved from. I think we will likely do a canvas without frame. I actually like the height - this is a very long room, with kitchen at one end, dining area in the centre, and great room where the fireplace is at the far end. So I look forward to enjoying the view from my kitchen, where my husband and I spend a lot of time.

CDR Design, LLC I really appreciate the mockup. I'm not good at visualizing, so this is helpful. My original idea was to have a rectangular canvas. Is it your opinion that a square piece will work better in this space than a rectangular piece?

Lovely space! The size/shape of the example from CDR is pretty much what I was thinking. I think it works nicely.

I think a rectangular one is going to feel very small. I would not recommend that. However, you mentioned 2 barns. I think that would be hard to fit in a square.
