Upright toilet paper holders anyone?

In an emergency situation we are replacing the hated pedestal sink in our powder room/laundry room. I am getting a 30” vanity that was in stock. (I hate being forced into an instant decision). I’m hoping this is not forever, but it will be a few years before I can redo the entire space. But I digress lol.

Anyway I’m losing the wall space where the old tp holder was, which I hated as it was ugly AND very difficult to reach. I will probably end up putting it on the side of the new vanity. I’d prefer a holder with a single base. In my guest bath the house came with a holder like this.

Which I like in theory but in practice is not great. You end up flinging the whole roll off when you try to tear the paper.

So I was thinking of one like this instead.

It seems like it would be a little more user friendly. This may also end the battle of over vs under lol!

Does anyone have one like this?

I have visited a friend who has your proposed style of holder and she's had it for years. It works wonderfully. (Hers actually is long enough to hold three rolls to use up one at a time, and she has hers as a floor-standing unit.) Which may or may not be design overkill.

I currently have your current style, and you do need to install so that the horizontal holder is just a bit not horizontal - this will work, 90+% of the time. But, depending on your bathroom style and layout, the vertical would indeed be great. If I re-design, I may end up doing your potential thought, myself. It's definitely practical and useful. Which is what bathrooms should be.

cynanjon: Here's one. On that website when you search for bathroom hardware, 5 pages come up and each page has a couple of the open-ended ones. I was looking for Umbra specifically to find more of the ones I bought several years ago and LOVE. Not available anymore but I might have to try these open ended ones now. Think I'd mount them vertically just to make sure nothing rolls off the end. The one I have from Umbra has a metal bar the t.p. roll sits on. The bar sits in the side mounts. But it just drops down from the top and sits in. Has never popped up and out. Love not having to squeeze a roller to get it back in. Ouch! Lots of other manufacturers. I finally get fed up with the wiggly TP holder I got at Pottery Barn. It's just a bad design having one attachment point holding a horizontal roll with constant pulling and tearing. I found this one at Rejuvenation. It costs almost twice as much as the PB holder but it's very stable with two screws. It's also got much more heft and coordinates well with the other PB items in my bathroom. Yes, it was made in China, but it makes the PB one seem flimsy in comparison.

Build and Wayfair seemed to have the best selection of more standard brands. Plumbtile has some brands I didn't see at many places. Build is a Ferguson company. I have bought from Build but never did returns. I bought my accessories through a sales person at a Ferguson brick and mortar store. Prices were at or lower than Build.com. I've ordered from Wayfair a few times and did one return. They made it easy and the credit came through quickly. I really wanted a pivoting arm toilet paper holder so that limited my options although I did consider other sets that didn't have the pivoting arm.

Hi Cynic...Meet Caroline!! I had a 4 1/2lb. Fox Terrier/Chihuahua mix, Susie, with me for 12 years. One of the purest joys of her life was jumping up, digging on the TP roll to unroll it, and then grabbing a mouthful, so she could gleefully run down the hallway, into the living room, and then the kitchen. When the long streamer would snag and break, she'd start the whole process over again, I finally installed a higher shelf to hold the rolls. Once in a great while I would put a roll on the original holder since it brought her so much joy. She only unrolled the paper in the main bath. She never bothered the paper in the master bath. And now you "know someone who has seen it!"
