Hoity toity hotels only do that so they can leave a half used roll on the holder and make it look like you're getting something fancy.

And mdln, even if the original was hung that way, they only did it like that until it was discovered that it really improved function by hanging it under. :-)

BTW What do hotels do with all those leftover partial rolls?

For those of you with kittens. Do you kind of squash your roll so the tube is oblong not round? Makes it harder for them to roll all the paper off.

I know hotels do a lot of shady things in cleaning rooms & baths. I think the over the top roll is a secret joke they play on all of us .... subtly trying to undermine our confidence when we turn ours under.

I've always had the toilet paper 'under' the roll. It doesn't spin off as quickly that way. But our bathroom has the built-in toilet paper holder and the Kirkland rolls are tight when we first put them on, so it's been 'over' for a few years now. Now I'm used to it.

Years ago my cousin and I went on a trip together. I'd "correct' the toilet paper and put it under and it drove her crazy!

My son and his wife have called a truce on this. If he puts it on, it's under. She does it over. Neither one corrects the others installation method.

And I'm not trying to hijack this thread, it's related: This last large buy of toilet paper, it turns out that the rolls somehow got squashed and the cardboard is oblong instead of round. This causes only one sheet to tear off at a time unless you remove it from the holder and squeeze it back into a round and replace it. I came out the the bathroom raising all kinds of racket the other day, I proclaimed to DH "the next time inspect to see if the cardboards are ROUND when you buy TP". He laughed hysterically, not only because I was unglued over something so unimportant, but he also reminded me that I was the one who brought it home this time. The whole world is on fire and we fall apart over such tiny things.

During World War 2 all toilet tissue came flattened in order to get more in the space. We were glad to get it no matter what the shape, as it was sometimes scarce.

Once had a guest reverse my toilet tissue roll !!! but I still prefer it under.

Over, but I am just glad there is TP on the roll in some places.

No one puts a new roll on but me..they will leave a square on or none but won't refill it..sometimes they will get a new one out but just leave it on the sink for the old battle axe to load. I suppose its just as well because if they put it on wrong, under, it will bring bad luck to all involved. LOL

I wish there was a poll connected to this thread so that it would be obvious to all you that say under - that you are wrong. Over is the only way.

If you're going to have it on a conventional dispenser, obviously the only way is "over". Anything else is uncivilized. If it's on a shelf or something, that's perfectly fine. As long as it comes off the proper side. But that discussion is for a new thread.

For the errant, what can I say? Some people refuse to be educated. I suspect those are the same people who think "Garage Sale" signs are stop signs. Or stop on the freeway entrances, looking in their mirror to find the opening they want. Or plop their grocery cart so they can take up the whole grocery aisle. and more. Send the inspector to their places and check this out.

I guess I am the only one who never really notices! I have no idea how our tp is facing. I'm cracking up at those who get so upset that they fix it in others' homes!

My wall mount for toilet paper holds the paper out from the wall, so the paper doesn't ever touch the wall. I prefer it hanging under, so it doesn't unroll so quickly. Do all you "over" people hang roller blinds "over" as well? ;)

Under. If you have cats, anyway. I got cured of "Over" by coming home to find nearly the entire roll unraveled thru the bathroom and down the hall.

Seriously, it's no harder for a human to use in either direction.

I've yet to see cats or for that matter toddlers unroll toilet paper. Don't know anyone who has seen it, nor do I know anyone who knows anyone who knows anyone who has actually seen it happen. Only time I've seen it is on the internet stories.

cynic- I wish you had been at my house when my youngest was 2.

She unrolled the entire or almost the entire roll countless times! More than once, she put it all in the toilet and tried to flush, causing an overflowing toilet. Pretty sure I even posted on GW in the bathroom forum looking for suggestions for toilets that have a more forceful flush to help. We replaced the toilet and she outgrew that behavior thankfully.

I can't speak for cats though, I've never had one.

Just been informed by daughter that the original patent for toilet paper shows it going over. And here it is!

I had a 4 1/2lb. Fox Terrier/Chihuahua mix, Susie, with me for 12 years.

One of the purest joys of her life was jumping up, digging on the TP roll to unroll it, and then grabbing a mouthful, so she could gleefully run down the hallway, into the living room, and then the kitchen.

When the long streamer would snag and break, she'd start the whole process over again,

I finally installed a higher shelf to hold the rolls.

Once in a great while I would put a roll on the original holder since it brought her so much joy.

She only unrolled the paper in the main bath. She never bothered the paper in the master bath.

And now you "know someone who has seen it!"

Over only. Who wants to scrape there nails on the wall!

Cynic... as I noted in the post before yours...I seen it. Don't know if it was Titania or Jebu, or both of them, but it was certainly no poltergeist. So, now you know someone....
