Remodeling Design Dilemma Fireplaces

im looking for suggestions/ideas on updating a fireplace in a home im renovating. I absolutely love how it wraps around the corner and replaced the hearth with Florida Wave Quartzite. I want to preserve the stone/brick, so tiling over it is a no. After cleaning it up then what....Whitewash? Paint the brick? If so, what color?

Interesting concept. Rustic mantel wrapped around fire surround and taken to the end of wall. I like how it is painted in the pic. An idea

I would clean up the brick and paint the walls a warm white. Or alternatively, maybe paint the walls a taupe color that is complementary to the brick, if I wanted the brick to blend in more. I would not paint or whitewash the brick. In my opinion it’s just not a good look. If I wanted it to be white or another color, I would have a facade built around the brick. I think wood could probably work for this, or some drywall - and I would paint over the wood or drywall.

You might want to repost on the discussion side...you'll get more responses. I'd tile or brick or stone the walls behind the fireplace and then cap it with a mantel. It will make it safer too as stoves should be surrounded with non combustible materials.

Poor son. Someone "updated" the fireplace already and did a horrid job. The floors are beautiful. I would not want to ruin the banister like they did the fireplace, with white paint, but the room does need lightening. The walls are already white and any color will only darken the room. Maybe he will need to invest in a lot of light fixtures. Is the ceiling white?

Are you keeping the tv above the fireplace? I don’t mean this to sound critical, but imo the fireplace is already a focal point in the room, so keep that in mind as you move forward with ideas. It sounds like your goal is really to make it more in tune with current designs and toning down the brick. So in looking at what you want to do, ask yourself if you want to remove the stepped hearth, blend in the tile or stone to be more cohesive with the overall color scheme, change the mantel, etc. Good luck! It is a pretty room.

Wall paint is your last choice. Do you like the brick? Would you whitewash it or paint it to brighten the room? A thicker mantle hung lower. Yes to paint the brass door. Solar shades on the window and slider. A sofa and 2 chairs to start. Floor lamp for reading some table lamps
