I would paint that trim white. It is so dark and overbearing. I would paint the walls a nice blue and I would also paint the fireplace.

I agree that the fireplace surround will look better if it is painted the trim color. And take down the wimpy valances, the blinds will look fine until you decide on something nicer. Right now your walls, fireplace, wood floors, rug and wood trim are all warm tones. Keep that in mind when you are choosing new items for the house. Most grays are cool-toned and often look "off" when put in spaces that are predominately warm-toned. Grays and tans can be mixed successfully but it's easier if you stick with one palette - warm or cool.

Natalie Myers just redid her fireplace grout to look more- well i want to say modern, but it’s actually more of an ancient look. you add more grout in between so it’s more of a flat finish with wide light grout. Here’s a link to her blog (its saysdays gone wrong but it’s because she tried to DIY and ended up hiring someone to do it for her. Poor son. Someone "updated" the fireplace already and did a horrid job. The floors are beautiful. I would not want to ruin the banister like they did the fireplace, with white paint, but the room does need lightening. The walls are already white and any color will only darken the room. Maybe he will need to invest in a lot of light fixtures. Is the ceiling white?

It’s going to be a big job for sure . The fireplace is actually stone that has not been painted . Room is dark and gloomy for sure . The ceiling is white but looks dull . Suggestions ?
