Need ideas - Long living room with wall of windows opposite fireplace

Lived here 30 years. Never loved the layout of furniture and we've had a few tries at it (sectional, multiple pieces). Looking for ideas of how to better set this up. We entertain a lot - need seating for 6 in a conversational way. Also need a reading chair for me - ideally near the stair end. Husband wants a swivel chair in the conversation space. Getting older, must be practical furniture. Really only 9' wide if walkable aisle left past fireplace. 26' long. Would it be weird to center the prime seating area off center of the fireplace? Open to full resdesign and furniture layout. Thanks!

It's a lovely space, but I agree that the furniture needs to be placed better. Please supply a floor plan with measurements of each item. Is there a TV in the room that needs to be considered?

How high is the hearth? In our house the hearth is high enough that it can be used for seating when a large group gathers--would a thick cushion accomplish this for you?

Ah, so you do have another space for lounging/TV watching. If you're pretty much sure you'd rather have a TV here too-I'd be satisfied with a (say) credenza or something to host a smaller size TV, which you can surround with some shelving with books, or maybe art..you can bring in plants-a lot of them..lots of interest since some of them grow like crazy and are virtually indestructible..)) and they always look at home-any style, any room you take, you can't go wrong with introducing plants, Remember Clifford Simak's purple flowers? lol you can paint the walls..you can wallpaper them if you're brave..you can put a mural on-there are some amazing ones. there are many many ways to make this room interesting. also don't forget-you look at it now while it's empty. but when you'll actually live there-you'll have furniture, fabrics, books..now it's a blank slate but it won't stay this way. it will be you and your family plus this room. it will be interesting enough without the feature wall. which you still can decide to do-I continue to think these wood planks are way cool..but they might be too overwhelming..and I would think very carefully about how to incorporate them, and whether it's worth investing in. That's personal of course and you might find that yes, you really want it, TV or no TV. Then I'd introduce more of that wood around..maybe wooden frames on art? maybe woven shades in the window? maybe painting the mantle another color so it'll blend more with the walls? And I'd use this plank wall more heavily then if I decide to put it in..it's a big space, and it might be useful and very very cool to have more on it than just the TV. Whatever you decide-it's exciting. Lots of possibilities here. And yes you're right..you don't need to match the wood finishes. You do need to consider how they will look together..in rare instances mixing just doesn't work. Say red mahogany or similar very expensive woods..)) find it hard to incorporate lol. Passed on amazing nightstands several years ago..the most useful amazing high quality nightstands I ever saw(on Craigslist)) but they just didn't blend in, what can I say.. But I don't think that's your case.

You appear to have baseboard heat/ac beneath those windows. That's something that would need to be addressed if you build in a window seat and/or taken into account if you place your sofa in that window bay. One drawback to having a sofa floating in the middle of the room (as shown in your pic) is that there are no end tables with lamps (hidden cord issues) for either end of your sofa ... unless you're setting one end table between the sofa and the wall that separates the living room and kitchen. Your walk-thru path would then be between the sofa and the large window/window/seat. If you prefer the back of your sofa against the wall (with end tables on each end), another option might be to move the doorway between the living room and dining room closer to the fireplace and face your sofa toward and centered with the large window with a couple of swivel rockers and table between them in that window bay.

Not sure that having the walking path meander from left to right is the correct solution for this room. I would change the furnishings arrangement in front of the fireplace to this. Your coffee table seems a bit small for the other furnishings. The silver mirror fades into your wall color. I have changed it to a black frame.

As I don't see photos and floor colors & structures I can only predict that the colour scheme You've choose is grays-beige-navy accents. I ve made some sketches below on which You can see that due to walkways from room to room there are different ways to establish a seating places. You can add an arm chair to complete seating zone with Your Kivik seat. As it 2,50 m length its better to put it alongside the longer wall. Also I propose to install Tv over the fireplace (honestly I dislike this combination, but here, in this space this option is useful. To support navy colour in dining room and connect spaces, I advise to get distressed carpets with a bit of viscose knitting, they are soft and have a smooth brilliance. You also have to establish a main low table to comfort seating area and 1-2 cute coffee tables. The place between front entrance and coat closet is very logical to install a console table with a) 2 lamps or b) 2 pair vases and c) a painting or a large mirror over the console. Mirror is more useful as it near the door. You can add a nice touch, making diffrent seasonal decorations on that console. Or a chest, as You wish, the main idea is to put long furniture along that wall. You can choose a mirrored wood with light golden or silver leaf nuances for console. To support your Kallax shelves I would recommend dark metal/wood legs for main table. Finally, You have to choose basics as table, chest or console, and after work on carpetry and tissues. You can visually change Your lounge room appearance by changing accesories and pillow cases etc. P.S. I did not put the main table in fromt of Kivik but its there))) Regards!

Thanks for comments and questions.

Let's assume we are starting from scratch and not be limited by the furniture that is there. Other than the original Naguchi table I'm not beholden to any piece. The chair in the corner by the deck slider is a reading chair that is big, clunky, not all that comfortable and no used. We would like to relocate the reading spot to the other end of the room (better natural light and separation from other workspaces). No TV. Hearth is 8" high and unlikely to be seating.

Here's a link to lots of living rooms that feature a Noguchi coffee table. Thought you might catch some inspiration for the seating pieces you'll need. Start an ideabook here with your favorites. Consider a chaise lounge and arc lamp for the reading area, and I'd opt for a 3-seat sofa and two armchairs in front of the fireplace. It is easy to get into good looking pieces that are not comfortable when dealing with more modern styles, so be judicious and try before you buy whenever possible.

I pulled the blueprint with the measurements. We will build the room to see what can be done. It sounds like there are two using the room daily. Folks have already made some wonderful suggestions. So don't know if we can beat that. Do you want to be able to view both the fireplace and outside from where you will be sitting? Can we have a picture of the wall to the left of the fireplace? I think you have been trying to make the FP the center of the room. If you re center the room it will give you more room for seating. My first thought is you need a large rug to anchor the space. Sorry for the terrible phone drawing
