Stone Fireplace Upgrade Ideas
Comments (3)Something you might try rather than painting is to stain the stone. I did this with some garden pots that were sand color and I wanted grey, so I diluted some black india ink and brushed it on the pots. I started off light and did a couple of coats to build up to the grey color I wanted, since I didn't want to risk starting off too dark. The india ink is permanent so the pots have remained grey through several seasons of rainy northwest weather with no fading. Perhaps there might be a product out there that is made specifically for staining stone. I would experiment on the bottom corner side of fireplace, so if it didn't look so great at least it's not visible. I think your idea for a beefed up white mantle would be nice, and perhaps adding some picture molding/trimwork from the mantle to the ceiling could dress it up, depending on the look you are hoping for. Changing the firebox trim/screen would help update the look as well. I just noticed Houzz.com has a new ideabook regarding painting fireplaces - perhaps that might give you some ideas which direction to go. Plus Houzz is such a great resource for ideas in general - you might find the perfect inspiration to help you decide which direction to go with your fireplace. Good luck with your project! :-)...See MoreYour ideas Please for Entryway paint ideas
Comments (5)Hi Carla2, My entryway is very much like yours, same stairway configuration, same oak finish, and wood floors, tall ceilings, and facing west! We had the entire house painted in Jan. and the painter used Dunn-Edwards paint using the SW "Ivoirie" color that I liked. Here is a photo of my entryway. (I haven't hung pictures back on the stairwell yet because that is a real challenge for me...In fact I posted on this forum some time ago and asked for suggestions and received some good advice but I'm still a little timid about making holes in the wall!)...See MoreStone Fireplace Upgrade Ideas
Comments (3)Painting is a no go. If you don't like what's there, then chisel it off and start over. However, I think what's there is very nice and the unfinished drywall is what is skewing your view towards the stone. You need your wall color on, and to tie in the terra cotta colors of the stone into the rest of the room. Then it will look integrated....See MoreStone Fireplace Upgrade Ideas
Comments (13)Ok - so first, thank you to all of you for your suggestions! We 1st painted the wall the fireplace was on and we are unsure of the color. I absolutely love yellow b/c it makes me happy, but please tell me if it "goes". We did the fireplace and are SO happy with it! These pics don't do it justice, b/c you can't see all the different colors it has, it looks like a brand new fireplace! The first pic is the wall color, then the 2nd is mid-fireplace, and the 3rd shows what we have as of now (the walls look darker in this pic b/c it was 11:00 last night!). We have to get a door (black?) and the hearth. We are thinking of doing black galaxy granite for the hearth and black granite tile in front of the fireplace (just a row to help w/ popping ambers). We are doing white baseboards, and light colored carpet in the room. Does anyone have any suggestions for the granite/tile/walls that would look better than our ideas? Bring 'em on! And thank you!...See MoreBeth H. :
