For a harmonious, monochromatic look, use hues in the same color family for both the walls and the ceiling. Don't be afraid to use the darker color on the ceiling. This will create a space that is dramatic and elegant.
It's perfectly fine to paint your ceiling with a bold color, even if the walls are white.
