Looking for Fireplace Suggestions and Ideas

Hello,

We are looking to fully renovate our condo and one of the items of focus is the fireplace. The condo was originally built in the 80s and the fireplace is currently a wood burning fireplace, and has a gas igniter to start the wood, fire logs, etc placed inside the chimney. Part of the renovation will also be to replace all of the carpet with vinyl or laminate and then fully repaint.

We would be looking to convert from a wood burning fireplace to natural gas burning fireplace and to make the fireplace the focal point of the room. We are looking for suggestions and ideas on going about this. This might be a matter of having a fireplace company come out a look at the existing setup and see what they have to say. Maybe a fireplace insert (maybe that is what the fireplace company will offer)?

Once the actual fireplace / chimney portion has been taken care of, the next step might be to remove the brick and build the wall flush with the fireplace and then doing tile or some kind of stone from the floor all the way to the ceiling.

Any suggestions and idea are greatly appreciated based on the attached pictures.

Look through Houzz for pics of fireplaces similar in placement as yours and then go from there when you find the ones you like.

Poor son. Someone "updated" the fireplace already and did a horrid job. The floors are beautiful. I would not want to ruin the banister like they did the fireplace, with white paint, but the room does need lightening. The walls are already white and any color will only darken the room. Maybe he will need to invest in a lot of light fixtures. Is the ceiling white?

Flo, I like that last idea most. I want to try to keep the cabinetry there, and it will be that traditional style if it is. But maybe I'll have to change it up. I'll need somewhere to store equipment, but I think I can get clever and have storage above the fireplace itself. I found this photo yesterday I quite liked that seems like it could fit my homes aesthetic. Brian/Springtime Builders, yes, our company is labeled 'home performance services', so we better know our stuff! This will be a 100% electric home, and the fireplace for backup was my fathers idea for that power outage anxiety which I just don't feel is justified where we are, or with a super efficient house. I submitted my plans yesterday calling for a propane FP, and the building dept. would've needed a permit for it. That extra bit of paperwork was all I needed to say forget the whole thing, we'll put an electric one in and buy a backup generator for the house with the savings.

This is just an "American Vernacular Farmhouse" that has been bastardized in the worst way over the years. The original ornamentation was probably limited to just the porch in Colonial or Georgian Revival, possibly a Queen Anne carryover from the octagonal bumpout. But most likely simple clean detailing. If you Google image "gable ell farmhouse" you'll probably find some historic examples of what it looked like before the DIY creep. Searching "farmhouse" you'll get inundated with current trends of white board&batten siding, black windows, and greyish metal roofing. Your house, your choice on remodeling. You might even like the current dental office look.

Yes I see what you were talking about. It does make the room darker. There are several things you could do but if you’re working with a thin budget then that would make a big difference. Gosh painting stone like that may be disappointing for you but it is also the least expensive. Another option would be to change it out to a stone that is lighter colored but that would be costly. Another option is to do a scratch coat over top of it. I don’t know what the cost of that would be but you could paint the scratch coat a lighter color. Just some thoughts. It is a pretty little room. Best wishes.

I will echo Side3. Start an ideabook for each room or feature you want to work on. By the time you've saved 10 or 12 photos you love, you'll have a much clearer idea of where you want to go and what will and won't work in your space.

Are you keeping the tv above the fireplace? I don’t mean this to sound critical, but imo the fireplace is already a focal point in the room, so keep that in mind as you move forward with ideas. It sounds like your goal is really to make it more in tune with current designs and toning down the brick. So in looking at what you want to do, ask yourself if you want to remove the stepped hearth, blend in the tile or stone to be more cohesive with the overall color scheme, change the mantel, etc.

Yes, we are definitely planning to keep the TV above the fireplace. I'm thinking along the lines of the attached picture. If I had to guess, I'm thinking the hearth would come out as well.

We have recently completed a fireplace in Little Falls, NJ. We used Danby White marble for the fireplace 15′ high. I think marble looks great here and it adds a little old-world pizazz to the room.
