Thanks all for the replies! treasureoftheday, I did see the ones you found (thanks for doing the search), but those really look like bedroom furniture. I can't see the wood doing well in our bathroom. What I was thinking of was more utilitarian, a vanity with a recess for the mirror to fold into and storage space either under the mirror or in drawers to each side. The reason I want to have the makeup area in the bathroom and not the bedroom or closet is that I find putting on makeup to be a messy job, so I want a sink at hand. We don't have enough room for a separate makeup area with sink, but I thought if I could squeeze in a makeup station, with its special magnifying and lighted mirror, near the single sink, it would do the job. Seems like one more item that my mind insists should exist, but doesn't!

Googling "makeup vanity lighting" should result in many sites that say side lighting is the most flattering and the most helpful for makeup applications. My own personal experience has shown that to be true. Fixtures should be about level (height)with your head. They can hang from the ceiling, attach to the mirror or the sides of the cabs/walls. I've had mirrors that extend the length of the vanity and are glued to the wall. My current mirror is glued and rests on top of the tile backsplash. My newly remodeled bathroom does NOT have side vanity lighting and I HATE it :( The only thing I'm dissatisfied with. Here is a picture of the mirror.

I used 4 similar sconces (Restoration Hardware Double Sutton) in my master and replaced the included incandescent light bulbs with round 40W LED bulbs because I was worried about heat and electricity usage. I'm very happy with the effect - cool, probably brighter though not as warm a glow. My contractor thought 3 sconces would have been enough, but I am happy with 4. I put in 2 75W LED can lights over the vanity, which though bright, cast facial shadows since they were located too far from the wall (10" vs. 4"- 6") - look a little ghoulish at 60+ years of age. We had above mirror makeup lights which I loved, so I would recommend horizontal above mirror lights for your situation. My RH medicine cabinets have 2 halogen lights, so sometimes I use just them to put on makeup, and they do run a little hot. I just don't put on makeup that often. Without photos, I am going to semi-guess here, but if you have recessed in the bathroom, you probably could go with sconces on the full length mirror, they will provide the proper fill light for applying makeup or shaving. Overhead light creates shadowing on the face. If you decide to do this, then the sconces must be selected, placement on the wall determined and the mirror laser cut for the opening to the electrical box. You cannot install sconces on a mirror after the fact, you will crack the mirror. Builder should understand this, but discuss it in detail.
