new seed snatchin season--anyone started yet?!!!
Comments (57)Anitabryk2, the best time to take cuttings of the crepe myrtle is right before they get ready to bloom. Before they have set buds, but certainly before they bloom. You can always try to root them now, and you could have some good luck. I am just saying optimum time. I would say that I am an absolute fanatic seed saver. But I NEVER snatch seeds at a plant nursery. I have a friend who owns and operates a nice nursery, and people steal his seed pods and even dig up plants from the flower beds out front! He sometimes depends on his plants making seed so that he can propagate them for plants to sell next year. It is hard for the 'little' nursery to compete with the box stores, and we are going to sorely miss them when they are gone. All that knowledge! All that advice! Sorry, didn't mean to rain on the parade. On the other hand, public gardens, post office offerings, whatever, are all fair game, as far as I know. Just take the time to research the plant you are sneaking up on so you know when the best time to snatch the seeds, and know also that some seeds are sterile, and will not germinate for love nor money! When I take a cutting, I try to get one that has just bloomed. That way, I can truley say that I am deadheading..... Janie...See MoreHow do you feel about honeymoon registries?
Comments (54)I like registries. Seems like the only weddings I go to are the children of friends, or friends of my son. I don't know what their personal style is anymore. And usually you know only one half of the happy couple. lol As a matter of fact, the last wedding we went to was in November. My best friend from high school, and her hubby who is my husband's employer, it was their son. I don't know Matt anymore, and the registry was great. I went to Target and bought a LOT of kitchen gadgets that they had listed. It was a ball! And I wrapped the gift in three boxes using tan contracter's paper, with brown, gold and green ribbons and bows. Each box was smaller than the next, and I built a tower. I LOVE gift wrapping. It's the ONLY time that a bride (and Matt, lol) THANKED ME at the wedding reception for the cool wrapping! I was introduced to the bride and she was so excited that I took the time to wrap the gift in their wedding colors! LOL (got the colors from the invitation) A honeymoon registry, well sounds odd, I've never heard of one. Very intersting. I would rather send money. I was thinking that this was done through a travel agency. But I checked the link and I guess I was wrong! I know that these companies need $$$ to keep going, but I don't want 10% or more of my gift going to someone else. I just as soon give cash to the couple. Jannie, I love ya', I do, but I think it is kind of sad that it took you 32 years to get over someone wearing a specific color to your wedding. I have no problem with anyone wearing any color they want to, to celebrate with me. I wore black and white to Matt's wedding, and his Mom was wearing a gorgeous black velvet formal dress....See MoreHow's honeymoon climber doing for you?
Comments (19)Cynthia- I only had GG for one summer. He too was eaten by voles this past winter. I bought a replacement and we'll see how it goes. It does get hot here too. We see over 100 occasionally and have days on end int he high 90's plus humidity near 100%. I've often wondered how it can be that humid and still not rain. I usually don't judge a flower performance the first year unless it's bought either bare root or own root. It seems that the nursery potted plants flower far better their first year than anything I can achieve. I wonder if they use a super duper fertilizer to help force buds. Comments (40)You mentioned you were considering Lady of Shalott. Here is my experience after several years growing. Many of her canes are flexible not strong like Quick or Crush. They do toughen up as they age but it takes a while for mine. This was taken at 1:30 today in our heat. It opened this morning. This is a bloom that opened yesterday afternoon, taken at 1:30 today Also taken at 1:30. Center flower will look this way by late afternoon today or late tomorrow morning. By the end of day this bloom will be ugly brownish but the petals will not drop cleanly. What I have discovered is that L of S will put out lots of flowers to compensate for lack of staying power but only if you flood her with water. The Lady seems to be a heavy drinker. Mine looks especially nice from a distance because color shows up. If you do not have the time to clip dead flowers she starts to look a bit trashy with all those brown ones hanging about. Wonder how the Quicks and Lav Crush would look on your fence mixed with a couple the Shalotts for contrast. Not the soft pink you were wanting however....See Moredianela7analabama
