Rust in 2007
Comments (38)I have kept close track of the rust in my garden this year. I plan to do as Ed suggests and cut back all of the foliage this winter, even the youngest seedlings. I have gotten rid of the daylilies that were most prone to rust. They were, IMO, rust magnets and not worth the trouble they were causing. The worst cultivars were: ABSOLUTE TREASURE (child of CHANCE ENCOUNTER) ALAKAZAM CHANCE ENCOUNTER (child of BARBARA MITCHELL) CHERRYSTONE (child of CREATIVE EDGE -->child of ADMIRAL's BRAID) DAVID KIRCHHOFF DESTINED TO SEE (child of CREATE YOUR DREAM --> child of ADMIRAL'S BRAID) DIXIELAND MEMORIES MAGIC CARPET RIDE (child of STUDY IN SCARLET) PEARLFISHER PINK (child of ADMIRAL'S BRAID) PRETTY GAUDY SHIMMERING ELEGANCE (child of SEMINOLE WIND --> child of BARBARA MITCHELL) SPACECOAST SURPRISE PURPLE SPACECOAST STARBURST STORM OF THE CENTURY (child of THUNDER AND LIGHTENING --> child of STUDY IN SCARLET) VOLUSIAN SPIDER (child of MOONLIT MASQUERADE) I have had some daylilies for over 4 years that have never had rust. And I have some that have have had very little rust. The little bit of rust I have found on the following DL's (if any) has been confined to the bottom leaves closest to the ground. When these leaves are removed, the clump has stayed rust free for an entire growing season. I consider the following to be rust resistant: BEAUTIFUL EDGINGS BELA LUGOSI BETTY WARREN WOODS BIG KISS CATHERINE WOODBERY CHARLIE PIERCE MEMORIAL HEARTS OF FIRE KWANSO VARIEGATA LADY NEVA LONG STOCKING MR LUCKY PEACOCK MAIDEN RED VOLUNTEER RUBY SPIDER SILOAM DOUBLE CLASSIC SILOAM PLUM TREE SPIDER MIRACLE SO MANY STARS WISEST OF WIZARDS ZONA ROSA There are an additional 70+ registered daylilies in my garden that I haven't listed. They aren't listed because they've been here less than 1 year ... or I have found them to be somewhere in the middle (they aren't good enough to call rust resistant nor bad enough to call rust magnets). Comments (5)The operative word there is "eventually". Years, maybe decades, before that happens and even them only if the zinc coating is damaged. But spraying a coating on them isn't going to prevent that from happening. The sprayed on coating is going to break down long before the electrostatically bonded zinc coating will. How come then you're not supposed to paint your wood raised bed gardens with anything other than a natural stain? What is the source of that claim? Many gardeners paint/stain their wood beds as needed. Please keep in mind that one can read all sorts of claims and personal opinions on how to do things, but that doesn't make them gospel. :) Evaluate your sources carefully and when in doubt, what is common practice is often a good guideline. Comments (32)natesgram, thanks, I've actually seen that link before, and it's what really pushed me towards painting. It really has a lot of helpful info too. As much as I would love to get new doors (shaker is my favorite!), I'm going with paint for now. The wallpaper...yes, I don't see what's wrong with it either. I took a really close up shot just to show the blue specks, but it really just looks like textured cream colored walls. I would like to know if the suggestions to remove it are because it's ugly/dated or more for resale purposes where painted walls are the preference for most buyers??? alabamanicole, now that I look at it some more, I agree the track lighting needs to go. It should be easy and inexpensive ($100-150?) to change it out. I love the look of bronze, but would it work with my ss appliances and ss cabinet pulls? Or should I get bronze pulls and faucet...CAN you have a bronze faucet and a stainless steel sink? Confusing! Also, thanks for your kitchen idea. The rest of my house is decorated with warm creams, reds, greens. I love organic stuff like wicker, stone, metal, and I love shaker style, country style, and arts-n-crafts style. I really like cream cabinets, but I already have enough cream with the counter, the tile, and the wall. The breakfast bar opens into the dining room, which is has cream furniture and red and green as the accent colors. The kitchen doesn't have to be matchy-matchy with the adjoining rooms, but it should flow colorwise. I'm going for a sleek, simple, yet casual and warm look with bluish/green cabinets. Below are kitchen looks that I love. Some won't work with my sleek cabinets, but it's just to everyone an idea of the look and feel that I hope to achieve... I love the color on this wall...if I ever take down my wallpaper! lol I love the warmth and casualness of cream cabinets. My dream kitchen...if I could start from scratch! :) Here, I love how the bottom cabinets are darker than the top cabs. Cute chandelier, and the island color is gorgeous! Ok, since I also LOVE the idea of two cabinet colors, what if I paint my top cabs cream and my bottom cabs blue/green? I really can't decide between my two colors below, and painting all the cabs either color will be too much cream in the room, or too much blue/green in the the room...no? I'm also open to sage green. If I go with using two colors, what if I paint the storage wall like the storage wall below (where the top and sides would be the blue/green color)?...See MoreGlidden's new Ultra High Gloss Trim and Door Paint--NOT happy
Comments (18)For what it's worth, we've had regular (not "High Gloss Trim & Door") Glidden paint on most of the interior and all of the exterior of our home for over 11 years and it's held up very nicely. We used the semi-gloss finish on our upstairs trim and doors. Most of it was sprayed on (not brushed) by our builder's contractors, though we've brushed the semi-gloss onto crown moulding and bead board we added about 8 years ago and painted walls/ceilings ourselves with eggshell/flat. I don't see a quality difference between the walls we've painted ourselves with Glidden vs. those we've painted with Sherwin Williams or Ben Moore's Aura and Regal paints. I don't have an allegiance to one brand of paint and am VERY picky about color, so choose brand depending on which color I like best for a space. I happen to like a lot of Glidden's colors which is why I have a lot of experience with their paints. I think all high-gloss paints are difficult to roll on and get a perfect finish, so wouldn't necessarily blame it on the brand... My husband stained and finished all of our downstairs wood work and doors and originally tried to use a high-gloss clear coat over the stain (I don't remember the brand-- not Glidden though), but decided to switch to a satin clear coat because it was so much easier to apply and get an even finish. The areas where he first applied the high-gloss clear coat (and then went over them later with the satin) don't look as nice as those with just the satin clear coat. He did remove all the doors to finish them horizontally (not the trim work and built-ins)....See MoreSuper Lumen
