Thanks for the responses. My daughter has a full sized bed, a nightstand, a longer dresser (under 5 feet) and a tall dresser (2 1/2 ft wide). I will post a pic of the layout later when I get back from finishing my Christmas shopping. Oaktown, in your 5ft wide bath, does the tub sit on the exterior wall, so the window is in the tub area? That is one of the options if I go with the 5ft wide and keep the extra foot of space in her bedroom. I don't love the idea of a window in the bath- and with the shower curtain drawn (they like shower curtains vs. glass) It probably won't be effective. If I go with the 6ft width, then the bath will be on the long wall, and the window will not be in the tub area, it alongside the tub.

michoumonster, to qualify under Title 24 as "high efficacy", the type of light either needs to be generically qualified, e.g. fluorescent fixtures meeting a certain standard, or it needs to be "listed." Anything you or I whip together out of components isn't going to be listed. It is also doubtful that these LED strips/transformer will meet the minimum lumens/watt to qualify anyway. Check out your strip LED specs (which ones are you using?), knock of 20% for power loss in the transformer, and see if you can meet the standards: â¢15 Watts or Less- Minimum of 40 lumens per watt â¢15-40 Watts- Minimum of 50 lumens per watt â¢Over 40 Watts- Minimum of 60 lumens per watt There are strip light fixtures that meet this, but if I understand correctly you aren't planning on using those. To ionized: if one wants uniform lighting in the cove, rather than just at spots, T5 would put out way way too much light for the application. I'm not into trends, so we pretty much do around our place as we really want it. This year I put 21 Lithonia LED recessed throughout the dining/kitchen/living/hall. Wife wanted the chandelier eliminated in the foyer, and installed a 5" recessed there. The dining room is set up with a ceiling fan/light, 4-5" recessed on a dimmer, then 2-3" recessed on another dimmer. The living room we added a ceiling fan/light, and 4-5" recessed lights on a dimmer. We're very happy with the outcome. I must say, when I was determining where to place the lights, the ceiling looked like a grid. I shot drywall screws into the ceiling, & ran twine from end to end. Two of the lights we ended up adding was in the hallway after I put a 5" recessed light there. We added 2-3" recessed at each closet. In the enclosed space, the recessed just don't light up like a globe does. Next is the bathroom. I can run all 21 lights, & still be under the watts used for our 4 bulb vanity light. Makes it seem all worthwhile.

She should have focused task lighting at the desk anyway, no matter what you decide for overall room lighting. That way she can have localized bright light for reading and writing while not having the entire room lit up like an operating room (which wastes electricity as well as just being aesthetically unpleasant). If she uses a computer at this desk, glare on the screen from overhead lighting can cause painful eye strain and headaches. Attractive adjustable desk lamps can be very inexpensive or cost a mint depending on what you get and where - if the desk is small and you don't want to waste space on a lamp, a swing-arm lamp mounted on the wall is an excellent solution. Many of that style are corded so you don't have to worry about fishing wires around in the walls. Lamps that take a three-way bulb are particularly good for task lighting.
