What do I replace old puck lighting with in kitchen ceiling?

I need to replace old puck lighting in our cabin ceiling. I have no idea why these were installed but I need something brighter, LED preferred and cannot recess. Currently there is puck lighting, 6 linked and hardwired. Any ideas?

It would be helpful if you provided a photo of the existing lights and described the wiring.
- Commercial Electric 5-Light LED White AC Puck Light Kit
- Boomerang 4 ft. Brushed Nickel LED Decorative Linear Flush Mount (to replace all lights)
- A few cabin-style ceiling lights (search results)
Be sure that whatever LED lights you choose are dimmable and that you include a compatible dimmer. You may need fewer than six LED puck lights.

Nobody knows what you have. A cabin is often dim. You need MULTIPLE light sources in each space or room, and not just ceiling lighting. A kitchen needs under cabinet in combination with pendant, or surface and recessed.........you need lamps in living areas, along with WHATEVER is in the ceiling.

Your best bet is an electrician, as there are many new led "recessed", requiring almost no clearance.

thanks for the coupon, I found one I liked but I don't think it's bright enough. My options are getting another flourescent fixture, a regular semi-flush with 3-100w (which I could put cfl to save $) or a track light with 4-50w gu10 and 1-35w gu10. Hi swapitfire, Try using a thin paper cutter blade to separate the pucks from the bottom of the cabinet. Whether you can reuse the transformer depends on the replacement led lights. For example, if the new light requires 24v, the existing transformer will not work out. If the new light requires 12v, but the total current draw exceeds what the transformer is able to supply, the existing transformer will not either. Look around for lights with the adequate light output first. In the meantime, check how the lights are connected to the transformer. Hth

Yes one does have to be title 24 compliant in CA if you're getting permits. I'd recommend talking to your contractor about what exactly the inspectors will enforce in your area. For my remodel I was doing new fixtures anyway, and bought everything with GU24 sockets or integrated LED. Contractor offered to do motion sensors or cheap compliant fixtures, then remove/replace after the inspection--maybe that would be an option for your chandelier? but probably wouldn't save money over replacing your can lights with LED. For the record I support energy conservation which is driving the regulation, but would have been much easier to just use low energy bulbs rather than being limited to GU24.

There's not an electrical box, but it looks like an old cast iron mounting box with a threaded rod attached to it. This is what the old fixture was attached to (~20lbs). I put more pictures below. The top left portion of the mounting structure is solid metal Yes those are the wires that were servicing the old light. The house used to have knob and tube, but to my knowledge it was all cleared out and replaced.

Get new LED puck lighting but really give us a little to work from. There are many choices for ceiling lights in LEDs IMO kitchens do not require dimmers and if you add under cabinet lighting make sure that is on a different switch for when you just want a drink of water. Post some pictures of what you have that is how you get real help.
