Large Master Bedroom- Help Please With Creating Spaces
Comments (1)We are building this plan, and both DH wanted an upstairs master suite, which this plan delivers. However, I'm worried arranging furniture might be awkward with the room size and the amount of doors. I was hoping to incorporate a sitting area with book shelves, and to have the option of moving bed to a different wall in future. We don't have furniture that we'd bring to this new bedroom, so there are lots of possibilities with this blank canvas. I had thought about moving the closet entry to the bathroom to reduce the number of doors. The wall of windows in bedroom faces East for a great view of property and sunrises, and we will have privacy to the West in the bathroom that we don't need blinds on window over bath tub. (Property is 160 acres, no neighbours for miles) Here is a picture of someone else's bedroom built on this plan. I don't know if it's their furniture, color combo's, or the scale of the windows, but it just wasn't what i was envisioning when I saw the plan on paper. It doesn't feel right to me. Any suggestions from GW would be so much appreciated. Thanks!...See MoreSuggestions for layout on a large master bedroom closet
Comments (10)I think my closet plans fall into the range of "real people". Most of us don't have Oprah-sized closets or the number of shoes owned by -- is that Mariah Cary? Most of us -- even if we had the space -- wouldn't install a custom island topped with granite. After all, as lovely as these spaces are, they're closets. Here's my inspiration picture -- though at 7' wide x 8' long, my new house closet will be a little bigger than this one: Specifics that matter to me -- obviously, you'll have way more space and will be able to have more: - 3' of walking space down the middle of two aisles. - A pretty light in the middle of the space ... and maybe a couple canned lights on the edges. This is, of course, not important in terms of function, but I want a bit of fancy in the closet. - Since I am only 4'11", I will shorten my hanging clothes area. I want matching hangers. - Plenty of folded space -- we are on the cusp of retirement and won't need lots of dress clothes. Plus we want no dresser in the bedroom, so we want space for EVERYTHING in the closet. - A couple built-in drawers for unmentionables. - Space for roughly 30 pair of shoes for me, 10 pair for him -- plus several pairs of boots for the two of us -- but our footwear doesn't need to be showcased as if they were something special. - A few attractive baskets up top for "boxing up" traveling items, purses, out of season items, etc.... and a planned space for a step stool since I want to access those baskets. - My inspiration pix shows wallpaper on the back wall, but I'll probably paint something pretty with a stencil. I have a round mirror, which I plan to repurpose on the back wall ... and I want a shelf underneath it, which can hold jewelry, etc. - A fluffy rug in the middle of the closet. - A valet rod on each side of the closet for "hanging out" church clothes. - One narrow "open locker" at the doorway on each side ... with a couple hooks. This will be for clothes that we plan to wear again ... a once-worn nightgown, workout clothes, or jeans. This'll keep them separate from the "completely clean clothes"....See MoreLarge his/her master closet vs 5th bedroom
Comments (22)Eric, If you search Mudroom here on Houzz, you will see all sorts of pictures. The one that I dream about has cubbies with hooks and shelves for each member of the family. A lot of mudrooms incorporate the laundry in this area as well. This is great for when your child plays sports and comes home from a game in their uniform that is muddy. You can have him/her strip down in the mudroom and the uniform can go straight into the wash. With the cubbies, all of the regularly used items, jackets, backpacks, sport equipment can be stored there out of the way and out of view. I am not a pro, but I took the pic of your floor plan and played with it a little. I have no idea if all of this is possible, but hopefully it helps you look at it from a different perspective. I re-arranged the bedroom and laundry area to incorporate a large laundry and mud room and a wider hallway. By removing the laundry from its current location, it expanded that bedroom and makes better use of the space in my opinion. I also re-arranged your kitchen to give you a better casual dining area. With kids, you need a space where the family can sit and eat on weeknights. Sure you could use your formal dining, but the kids just get everything messy, so I think it is better to have an area where it is easy to clean and lessen the chance of them ruining good linens or area rugs. I also opened up that wall to allow quick access to the Master. It doesn't make sense to me to have such a long walk from the kitchen to the Master. I don't know how you feel about that hallway, but by adding that opening in the kitchen wall, you could eliminate it altogether and expand the kitchen and/or that bedroom even more. I also did a few other tweaks that I would want to see if it were my house. One being the powder room, there are several other bathrooms including one right next to it, so I would rather that be the coat closet serving the main entry. I did lose the walk in pantry, but am guessing that a talented kitchen designer could configure cabinets with pull out drawers that would serve that function for you. I also removed the door to the toilet room. If that wall is load bearing, just make it open. I think it is unsanitary to have to open a door before washing your hands. This is not perfect by any means, it is an awkward layout because so much needs to go on one side of the house. If it were possible to move plumbing, it would really expand your possibilities. Hope this was helpful to you!...See MoreWhat lamp type for large master bedroom? Photos included here.
