Please Help With My Tiling Dilema
Comments (6)Doug_gb, I'm sorry to tell you this, but you may be the one who needs the help. To simply call someone nuts and tell them to take meds is, at the very least, out of line. How you arrived at that conclusion from my post is a mystery. But i'll try to figure it out. Was it because i went against your advice? Because I do. Rosylady says "We have never set tile before," and therefore your "advice" is, "Hey,sure! Read a PDF file! Watch a YouTube video!" Was it because I mentioned mud-setting tile? Does that somehow offend you? Was it because i bring up the fact that, as Rosylady says, she received a quote for, "$ 10,000 labor only," and that if she has that much square footage it would be too much for someone who has never set tile? (In metro-Detroit, the going rate for tile LABOR ONLY..is around $3 to $3.50 a sq. so $10,000 worth of tile work would be about 3,000 sq ft). Was it because I said, "You must pre-build with Ditra/ Kerdi in mind? I, for one, saw no pictures of any of the 3,000 sq feet they intend to install or have installed. Did you see any pictures? In closing, and i hope you respond, with more than, "You're crazy," I find it negligent to tell a DIY'er, who has asked, "Am I crazy if we try this?" to, 'Yes, go ahead and set 3,000 sq of tile. If you screw it up, it's as easy as re-painting." If they DIY this WRONG, they have to bust out the tile and probably throw it away, then hire someone to clean, prep, and install AGAIN. But not until after they buy NEW tile and materials. Sorry Rosylady, it needed to be said....See Morefaucet dilema -- please help
Comments (13)napagirl - we are GCing the project ourselves, so we are saving quite a bit that way. The stone is limestone quarried locally, so again, not too pricey. Here's the Isokern website. You'd have to contact them to see if they have a distributor in your area. There are lots of places that carry Cantera products in CA here is one with a nice selection of fireplace surrounds Cantera Stone Art We were able to directly connect with a supplier from Monterrey who gave us distributor pricing. It makes a big difference to not have to pay all the markup that is added to support all of the middlemen and women as well as the fancy showroom!!...See MoreA T-day dilema I need help with
Comments (29): A T-day dilemma I need help with........... A few clarifications please if you don't mind... 1. Are you asking for some specific help or just whining? It the same for me. When I've made an "oh carp! what have I done?" mistake. I whine a little to hubby (aka best friend)only, but I get over the whine and fix the problem. 2. Do you want a way to gracefully tell your DIL you are not going to do the T-Day dinner for her family? Call her, apologize and tell her after a time to think you realize you will not be able to accommodate so many people. Because of your health issues and the stress entertaining causes, you would prefer a more serene, smaller (immediate) family affair. 3. You are hosting but you want to tell them to bring side dishes? Since your DIL did the invites call her and tell her to let the family know they are expected to bring the sides and desserts. They don't bring they eat only what is available. 4. You don't want a drunken or stoned guest causing fights over their issues in your home? Let your DIL know to tell them there is no booze or illegal use of drugs in the house and any abusive or disruptive persons will be asked to leave willing once, then escorted to the door if necessary or by police if even more necessary. I would like to offer a few words of advice from experience. Marital problems between your Son and His Wife are their business and you may want to stay out of the offering your opinion business there or you could lose your son and grandson by vocalizing and publicly posting how much you hate the DIL. It would be much better to refrain from announcing to everyone your DIL's issues and problems in any way. My Son and his wife went through some very problematic times after a few years of marriage. I knew they were hurting each other and it could end in disaster. As hard as it was I Kept My Big Mouth Shut. I cried alone and prayed for them to find joy again. After being asked by son for my opinion. I told them both at the same time they had been together for reasons and they had taken vows to love, cherish and respect each other. I told them sometimes vows are hard to keep, breaking them is not planned, sometimes people change what they are and believe over the years. They had to look at the future and did they want to make the hard effort to mend the breaks and reseal the vows. If not they could break the final vow "till death do us part" and stop hurting each other and the people who loved them. Her Mom on the other hand bad mouthed my son to everyone including our grandson and interfered constantly in the problems. After they started to work on the marriage she continued to be a disruptive influence in many escalating ways. She is no longer welcome to the family gatherings at my DS and DIL's home. DIL will not allow her contact with our grand kids and they will not attend events where she will be. I don't think DIL and I will ever have a lot in common, but our shared love for my son and their children binds us as family, how it should be. Good luck with your dilemma. I try to remember a good heart has no room for hate. LIL...See Moreweird fireplace chimney dilema - help!
Comments (19)It's such a weird spot for a fireplace! At first I thought maybe you should just get rid of it because it's so awkward for furniture placement. But, I hate the thought of getting rid of a working fireplace. Because there is that weird cutout above, that makes me think the whole shape is kind of fake. If this were my new house, I would chop down the shape and just make it into a regular rectangular fireplace with mantle on top and more in style with the rest of your home. I like the tile hearth and tile hallway, I'd keep those as is. I would also keep that great round top front door. These things look like they are original to the home and from what I can see, they are in good shape. You should concentrate more on the shape of the fireplace and the staircase. Getting those 2 things to match the rest of the charm of the house will do wonders. Good potential here....See Moresimplechoices
