That is some house! Let's assume you are keeping the stone and not painting it.

Let's start with the garage doors. Find a medium dark color in the stone and paint out the doors. It will then "disappear" into the stone and not draw your eye from the front on the house. It can disappear into your gravel driveway.

Next the house: Medium or darker color of stone for the siding under the stone, so the base does not float. The left side can be the same or lighter version. Next paint the roof trim, Red. Add red window boxes under those upper windows and paint the front door red. Add a planter near the front door where you can tie in more red.

The red roof is a dominant feature so you can't ignore it. Embrace it!

Ah thank you all great ideas, I had not thought about doing the garage doors a different color, that does makes sense. I love flower boxes but have a toxic thumb lol but will consider that it would add interest. thank you

I have a toxic thumb too but manage to keep begonias alive no matter what. There are also very good fakes if you are willing to invest and remove with the seasons.

Hi the stone part is the front and mostly obscured as you can see I took a closer one, the paint color is around the brown doors and under the eves. the storms are brown and we will keep them but could paint the doors but they are mostly glass here is another shot,

Thanks for additional photo. I'd look at the blue spruce in front as a color guide. If that turns out to be too much color, pick one of the lighter rocks' colors. The underpart of the carport should stay a light cream or other light color so it's easily visible (especially the pillar supports) as you drive through toward the garage in the way back. I would paint the main front door and the overgrown front door the same light color. It looks like these photos were taken in the fall. It's often easier to make color decisions after doing all the pruning. The trees could be limbed up following an arborist's guidance if you wanted more head room underneath.

Actually I am going to redo the landscaping that massive bush will be gone and much will be redone, I though it made sense to paint first but maybe I should do the landscaping first but I thought maybe new plants would be co-ordinated. You have a very cool house. The red roof is a crime. And there's not much you can do about it. So, you have 2 choices. You can make your colour decisions and try to tie the red roof into the overall design. Or, you can ignore the red roof and make your colour decisions on what is right for your architecture. I would do the second option. Ignore that red roof and go for a sleek, earthy, modern colour scheme. I would pull a mid taupey grey colour from that great stone and paint the siding. For the garage doors, take that taupey grey colour and go a lot darker. You say your windows are a dark brown and not black. I'd keep them as is, they look great! When it's time to replace the roof, go with a dark charcoal. And while you are having work done on the roof, change the roof line at the front of your house to include some kind of overhang or separate roof for your front door. That would give your front door some much needed presence plus keep rain off you and your guests. Good luck! Very cool house!!

First, have. you considered taking down the pine tree? You will save those beautiful birch trees.

I love the red roof. It needs to be washed.

Not a pro. Would a "peacock blue" work? I think that it might be both attractive and dramatic.

JudyG we had not considered taking any trees down, we are having a landscaper come in so hopefully suggestions will be made its all really overgrown and yes some things are choking others although I love all our trees and taking any down would be hard but the birch are beautiful the glow beautifully in the morning. thanks for the feedback

I think (hope) the pine comes down. It doesn’t look strong and I would hate to see it land on that great red roof! Birch trees are dear in my state. I love to have yours in my yard. We settle for river birch, which in itsown way is beautiful, but there is nothing like a white birch.

JudyG which pine tree are you talking about? we have a few, in the front? by the front door? or to the side? I feel like the one in front doesn't look in good shape but a tree guy said it was ok but treating it for something I don't know its hard to trust people when they make money off coming back and treating things.

In photo #3…right next to the birch. That pine has been , I hate to say, butchered. It will never fill in.

I agree with others that a dark teal could look amazing! or some kind of dark blue. either way, make sure it's a tad greyed out -- not too bold, so as not to clash with the red roof. it will look amazing with the stonework.

If the spruce is not doing well, it's better to remove it than have it come down in a storm. Painters usually need at least a foot of space between the shrubs and the house. So prune first, paint second, replant third.

regarding trees: yes, you definitely want to get your trees checked every year if possible. you don't want property damage or somebody to die as a result of a failing tree. plus, if there are beetles or some kind of sickness, they might catch it and get it treated before it's too late. we don't have a lot of trees on our property, but one of them is a giant. we go ahead and combine our big tree checkup with pruning of our smaller trees to make it worthwhile.

Black is such a huge exterior color now and your house is a perfect example of where black could be used. If not black a deep hunter green.

I don't think so? I'm not sure what that would entail but it sounds modernish and this is definitely not that its a woodsy house more in line with the stone cottage side vs the addition. Its all wood, floors walls ceiling. massive stone fireplace, cute and cozy

surrounded by trees so greenery out all the large windows. Its odd but charming, much like my family lol. Best part of the house is the yard to be honest. some pictures for you, massive fireplace its tri sided with one part on the outside. wood beam ceilings are nice, stained green in the office with nice views all the rooms have massive windows.

your stone fireplace and angled wood ceilings are stunning! that's what I was referring to. the angles are mid century while also bringing in some woodsy details. it's beautiful. thanks for sharing!

ok so its been a long time since I posted about this but we did finally get it painted - thank you all for your feedback in the end we went with a color very similar to what houssaon was suggesting. Interesting name is Gargoyle lol by benjamin moore, it took me a minute to get used to the darker color but I think it came out well, its a more harmonious color with the rest of the house and the property in general. To my naked eye its got more green in it but might just reflecting all the trees. ok next up landscaping! woot
