Vinyl siding vs hardi plank
Comments (13)We might have the most expensive house in our neighborhood, but I don't know for sure and I really don't care. My heirs will be happy with what they can get for it, and I won't know one way or the other. In the meantime I will have enjoyed having exactly the house I want, with beautiful gardens, a fabulous workshop, and construction quality and energy efficiency that doesn't make me cringe. If the next owner gets a slight bargain, so be it. Perhaps there will be karma points....See MoreLP smartside problem
Comments (93)We are also having a million dollar house built and while watching our siding being installed in the rain, several things the installers said raised red flags. I downloaded LP SmartSide installation instructions and found that our nails are seriously overdriven, the ends of the planks are not painted, the butt joints have no space between them, and given all of that, I doubt that the flashing was done correctly, or anything else for that matter. We gave a copy of the instructions to our GC and he said he would have someone come and check it. We have been extremely upset, knowing that we have NO warranty on our siding as it is. I even called LP and they confirmed. They said he is going to have to bite the bullet and replace all of it. From what he said the day we met with him over this issue, he thinks he’s going to fix it. There is NO way to fix it. If they try to cut the boards to create gaps, they’ll cut the Tyvek under it. As it is, I think a lot of Tyvek will need to be replaced when they remove the existing siding because it will be full of nail holes. Construction has moved along very slowly and we just want to get moved in. Replacing the siding will have to wait, but it’s going to be very unpleasant if we need to hold back back enough money to cover new siding when it comes time to make our final payment and move in. Any suggestions on dealing with our GC on that, or do we just pay in full and ask for a written agreement that the siding will be replaced within the first year? No way the original installers will be doing the replacement. It took them FIVE MONTHS to finish the install. The siding was on pallets outside through many rainstorms. It’s the textured, but it should not have been out in the rain as it was. We’ve lost so much sleep over this!...See MoreSeeking Siding Suggestions!!
Comments (7)I like that dormer, it creates a quirky charm! You are right about the double 4 or 5 inch panels. I had the same dilemma when I had to replace my 7.5" aluminum siding. I ended up with double 6" and the look of it pleases me. PlyGem makes both 7" insulated in 21 colors and double 6" insulated in 16 colors, plus a variety of other models (non insulated, beaded, cedar shingle etc) from 6" to 7". Georgia Pacific makes a 6" insulated vinyl panel; CertainTeed offers a 6" beaded (might not be a detail that you want, but take a look) and also a 7" vinyl "shingle" look which I think would not be out of place on your house. I found these on a quick Bing search. Availability in Canada is a question I can't answer, though. Painting the 8" is certainly possible, but I believe repainting would be needed after 10 years, more or less. You'd have to check with Sherwin Williams on that. Ask around a bit more about the cement based siding, unless it is out of your budget. It could be that your contractor just isn't well versed in its installation (I understand that it is much more work to install, also)...See Morelp smart siding board and batten vs. vinyl
Comments (31)The Chelsea Building Products website says Everlast composite siding is a mixture of polymeric resin and granular stone. The Intertek Code Compliance Research Report CCRR-0201 says it's made of cellular (foamed) PVC with a chemically bonded acrylic cap (containing the color) with no mention of the granular stone which is probably some kind of stone dust. The report requires the siding to be installed over structural wood sheathing. The 4.5" and 6.875" reveal horizontal lap siding must be fastened every 16" with 2.5" s.s. screws or 2" roofing nails into the wall studs and the 11" reveal vertical board & batten siding must be fastened with 1 5/8" s.s. screws every 7.5" into the wood sheathing (which is a lot of screws)....See MoreAnna (6B/7A in MD)
