Remodeling Woodworking Flooring

new floors don’t match stairs

Just got new floors and the team that installed is recommending we keep old stair color even though much darker. I think it takes away from the look. The runner is definitely being removed. Any ideas on how to match stairs to floor? The team said sanding is really hard to do on bannister. Any advice on keeping and or how to change color?

Curious... what was the rational to not match new floors to existing tread and handrail stain?If you prefer lighter wood tone (your new floors) you'd need to remove spindles & railing and either sand & refinish (depending on wood species - are treads and new floor same type of wood?) or replace treads to match new flooring... From experience it's a big job! Where did you purchase the flooring - do they sell treads? If not, suggest you speak to a few flooring & stair specialists (not just big box store sales reps no offense meant). When we installed our h/w floors the flooring store's installers were able to sand & match our existing stairs to the new floor...but we had the same wood species (oak) on both...

What about a black stain, if you have to keep the treads and railing?

The weave in looks OK, but there is no excuse for that result, other than not being able to source matching material due to cost or time constraints. I wouldn't want to live with that also, and I would never expect one of my customers to think that's OK. But it is, as you say, a conversation piece. Even if you source very similar material in terms of species, sawing, age and location, a flooring expert/artisan is still going to have to tweak the new material with stains and dyes to make such a repair less noticeable.

I encourage you to live with it for awhile before you decide on anything. I had the same situation in carpet against my marble when I built 14 years ago but I lived with it until just last year when I tore out the carpet and got laminate. I would hate to see you paint the stained wood on your stairs. I think the balance is striking against the white and once it's painted it is VERY difficult to go back. As suggested, when you replace the carpet, that would be the time to use get a closer match to flooring which I agree would look nicer. Since the floor appears darker, a good sanding on the rail and stairs with medium grit paper would remove the varnish/poly and some stain and you could then darken it to match the flooring. Until then, consider adding some accents that bring out the golden oak color and "justify" that wood color in the foyer. Perhaps a small table or bench or anything that compliments the color of the stairs. Over time, I can assure you that it will become less predominant (as you have found) and your eye will focus more on the total impression. Also, you could provide a more spectacular focal piece in that area that draws the eye in a different direction. JMHO.

I totally feel your pain! Remodels aren't cheap and it's not easy for everyone to picture what something will look like before its done. I had a similar situation - I just didn't feel that I could afford to redo the tile in the entire house - so I only did part of it. Huge mistake. I "solved" the problem with carpet squares. You can buy just what you need, get pretty creative and install them yourself. I'm sure there are many companies, I used Flor. I recommend getting samples - as it's impossible to accurately assess color from the computer monitor. (Samples are free during promotions and sales are frequent.) I would also suggest that moving the sofa to face away from the kitchen will not only cover up some of the transition, but also define the space in a way to enhance the separation of the rooms.

Only my instinct given that he didn't execute the visible finishing in an accepted, and well-known, manner. If the visible isn't up to standards, what's behind the walls? My alarm bells went off but it's too late to check it without tearing it all out. You'll know within the year and that's why a warranty is so important. I'm just a check, check-again person after reading the forums for several years. Also, I'm going through my own reno and, despite written instructions and pictures, there have been some silly errors. I try to have a basic understanding of what should be happening so that I can, hopefully, catch it before we have to tear out the work. Also, hired a GC with positive local standing...just like you did. Mine has taken care of things, which have been minor like the wrong size cans and placement. It's like any medical issue, I'm my own best advocate and it's my duty to ask questions. I have to have an idea of the possibilities to ask the questions. Approach it like that. I see no reason to be confrontational. After some self-education with the TCNA handbook (Tile Council of North America), johnbridge is a great place to become acquainted with basics, just say that you expected silicone at the changes of plane and you're confident that he (or his tile person) will follow industry standards.

Thank you both! I think I really want to find someone that can help me change the treads and railing! I just need to figure out who can do the work.

Search out flooring stores - NOT Lumber Liquidator types though - on Houzz, Google, etc. They will have stair contractors they work with.

My daughter did a gut rehab and had wooden balusters and Newell post. Had to replace some of the flooring and restain It all. She had all of the stairway wood sanded in place and restained to match the new floor color. It was tedious and she had to pay of course. But the result was beautiful.

I cant find a pic of the stairway but it matches her floor perfectly. All red oak.

personally, I think with your light floors your stairway would look really good if it was several shades darker than the floor...minus the orange shade.
