Oh no! Is my island going to be too big?
Comments (8)Don't panic! I think it will be fine. And if not, you can always alter the size of the counter top once the cabinets are in. We are also moving our kitchen to a new space and putting in an island. When I saw the progress the other day I too worried about the size and the placement of my island. We have sheetrock on the walls so it looks a little more like a room. We don't have any cabinets in yet (they are supposed to arrive this week). I am hoping that since I made sure I had ample room around the island that it will be fine. So far everything on paper seems to make sense in the rest of the renovated area so I am just crossing my fingers as well.... BTW I love the fireplace with the seating - very cozy....See MoreIs my island workable or too big for kitchen scale?
Comments (17)cooki1268: It's from AYA kitchens 2009 winter catalog/magazine. Here's the link, but it's a huge pdf. I think it's page 12. We're not going with their cabinets, but I did love that picture (gotta find those stools!) www.ayakitchens.com/media/.../AyA_Inspired%20Design2_sm.pdf Thanks to all the other smart and objective advice givers! I'll show my current floor plan, which will help you all see where the doors lead to: We added the wall and opened up the basement stairs to close off the family room from the front door. We also changed the sliding glass door into a picture window and added the side garden door. We face west so we get a ton of light from the back windows and garden door. There's also a silly 40" raised breakfast bar behind the D/W. To answer some of florantha's questions: you can see my current kitchen layout does curve into a "U." I was trying to limit that for 2 reasons: not going to invest in a CD fridge and hate to see the fridge sticking out into the kitchen. As well, also dislike that dead corner between the fridge and stove. One cook household, and we do eat at home most of the time. Two kids that like to help with baking. I was trying not to move walls, windows, sink, etc., simply to put my money into cabs and counters. Need seating for 4 regularly, but have a large dining room table for bigger dinners....See MoreWill My Kitchen Island Be Too Big?
Comments (41)My overhang ended up being less than my original plan. It’s 13 1/2” on the long side and 8” on the short. My first island top was marble with 15” and 12” overhangs but the fabricator was not able to repair his mistakes so long story short, my DH and I ended up DIYing our walnut top. That was the max size I could get without a custom up charge. It’s worked out fine for us. I installed a 12” wide cabinet on each short side which contributes to the island depth but reduces the overhang. These cabs are assessable from the sides so I do not have to move stools to access them. I did not want to give up that storage for 1 1/2” more overhang. I never give it a thought and we are completely comfortable sitting at the island which is our preferred spot. The short side is used as overflow or a perch spot during parties. I’m 5’8” and hubs is 6’ and we have no issues with it. My stools are comfy and the island is the only comfortable place I can sit in the house with my bad back. I am actually glad it turned out as it did since my entire kitchen, living and dining is only 24 x 24. My island is s comfortable size for all our needs My pullouts under the sink are each 18” wide. The left one is short to allow for the disposal. All plumbing is tight to the back left and my drain is offset left. Try to squeeze in a pantry so your dry goods can be together. It doesn’t look like you’ll have much storage for food. Maybe the steam oven can b incorporated into a pantry cab. I have an 18” pantry pullout that I love. Thank you! I really like my glass uppers. And in spite of what many claim they are extremely easy to keep clean and do not collect grease. It keeps my kitchen light and bright. I love my Ikea kitchen. It works so well for me. Post your plan when you have one!...See MoreIs my kitchen island way too big?
Comments (14)Julie: Step back and look at the big picture please. When you're in business, you take some unfair beatings on some jobs; it's inevitable. They are sometimes hard to take, but say you did a million dollars in sales and ate $10,000.00 worth of work. Swallowing 4 $2,500.00 pills isn't easy, but combined they're only 1% of your sales. If you can keep your losses to 1%, you're into black ink. Same thing here. Look over your whole project. How much turned out well versus how much not so well? What is your percentage please?...See MoreB K
