Oh no! Is my island going to be too big?

We're still at demo stage, but I made a VERY rough mock-up of the island with a sheet of cardboard and shop-vac. It looks just HUGE in the small room. I am feeling panicky about it!

The countertop as planned is a couple inches bigger than 4' x 5'. The room is about 19.5' x 15.5' including the hearth seating area...

I made it that wide so I could get more storage in it and still have a 12" overhang for seating. It's going to have a wood (plank or butcherblock, species undecided) top; the perimeter counters will be light honed granite. I wanted a sort of farm work table feel. But the room is very small and ceilings low.... is it too overwhelming?

It's hard to tell from the photos, and of course I didn't mock up the perimeter counters, etc, but it just feels gigantic right now?

Should I decrease the overhang for seating by a few inches, at least in width, to make it a longer, thinner ractangle?

I don't think it looks big at all. Your island is amazingly functional for its size, as planned, and I wouldn't do anything to change it.

I doesn't look too big to me. I don't think it overwhelms the space in your photo, either.

We were worried that our window would be too big also. Now that it is in we love it. The window starts at a little over 40 inches from the floor also. The rough opening was 84" x 62". Love the light and the view.

g'day hank, it always pays to research trees before buying and planting, for larger specimens like the gums etc.,. the safe working distance from homes, sheds, overhead utilities etc.,. is the maximum height growth plus 50%. for me i just simply reckon most of those big forest trees just aren't suitable in suburbian gardens or streets. and lopping them just creates bigger problems as the new growth is more prone to parting company with the tree in bad weather or even in not bad weather. len mail len lens garden page

My overhang ended up being less than my original plan. It’s 13 1/2” on the long side and 8” on the short. My first island top was marble with 15” and 12” overhangs but the fabricator was not able to repair his mistakes so long story short, my DH and I ended up DIYing our walnut top. That was the max size I could get without a custom up charge. It’s worked out fine for us. I installed a 12” wide cabinet on each short side which contributes to the island depth but reduces the overhang. These cabs are assessable from the sides so I do not have to move stools to access them. I did not want to give up that storage for 1 1/2” more overhang. I never give it a thought and we are completely comfortable sitting at the island which is our preferred spot. The short side is used as overflow or a perch spot during parties. I’m 5’8” and hubs is 6’ and we have no issues with it. My stools are comfy and the island is the only comfortable place I can sit in the house with my bad back. I am actually glad it turned out as it did since my entire kitchen, living and dining is only 24 x 24. My island is s comfortable size for all our needs My pullouts under the sink are each 18” wide. The left one is short to allow for the disposal. All plumbing is tight to the back left and my drain is offset left. Try to squeeze in a pantry so your dry goods can be together. It doesn’t look like you’ll have much storage for food. Maybe the steam oven can b incorporated into a pantry cab. I have an 18” pantry pullout that I love. Thank you! I really like my glass uppers. And in spite of what many claim they are extremely easy to keep clean and do not collect grease. It keeps my kitchen light and bright. I love my Ikea kitchen. It works so well for me. Actually a bit of an update on this. We went to a bunch of showhomes on the weekend. A couple of thoughts. 1. The 48" between the stove counter and island is overkill for us. We could live with 42" but i think we will be at 44". 2. I was so adamant about a 15" overhang as per all the websites but we found 12" is perfectly fine for a counter height island overhang. We may go 13" or 14" tops. 3. I am a little worried about the length of our island. The counter will actually be 86 3/4" with a 1 inch overhang contrary to my plan. The side of the island is 32" from the kitchen table. Not ideal but not terrible either. BUT if we go for a smaller width cabinet next to the sink (say 21" or even 18") then i worry the island won't look symmetrical. ARGH. 4. I feel the depth at 56" is too big. I liked the 48" depth and could live with 50" or 52". 5. The cabinet place suggested back to back cabinets so a depth of 24" cabinet + 12" cabinet + 12" overhang = 49" countertop depth or perhaps 24" + 16" + 12" overhang = 53" countertop depth or 24" + 12" + 14" = 51" countertop depth. 6. On the side of the island, do i go with a 1" overhang or 0.5" overhang? Any additional thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Don't panic! I think it will be fine. And if not, you can always alter the size of the counter top once the cabinets are in.

We are also moving our kitchen to a new space and putting in an island. When I saw the progress the other day I too worried about the size and the placement of my island. We have sheetrock on the walls so it looks a little more like a room. We don't have any cabinets in yet (they are supposed to arrive this week). I am hoping that since I made sure I had ample room around the island that it will be fine. So far everything on paper seems to make sense in the rest of the renovated area so I am just crossing my fingers as well....

BTW I love the fireplace with the seating - very cozy.

LOL, Bmorepanic...Wise advice, I think. At least breathe.

Stacey, your aisles are large enough, according to the plan, and at this point, it's your most accurate judge. Things are deceiving at different stages of construction. The same room can look huge one minute, then get sheetrock and look too small. Hang in there and trust your decisions.

Wow!

What a neat space!

Don't cut it down at all. Looks like you may be eating a lot at that island (DR is a ways away), so the 12" overhang is the minimum you'd want for comfortable seating!

I can hardly wait to see it come together.

And boy you weren't kidding about a rough mock-up! LOL!

These stages of construction are INSANELY deceiving...according to your plan, you've got nice aisles (as previously stated!) as well as good seating.

You should have seen me when I climbed into the big hole for our foundation and actually measured myself because I didn't believe it was big enough! LOL! what a joke! and then for some reason the framing makes the space look smaller!? It seemed better when the drywall was up to really get perspective.

(Believe me, bmorepanic, there is plenty of wine!!!

I will try to stop freaking out about every little thing, or it's going to be a long haul. Things are NOT going well elsewhere in the house, though, so I am on edge (bad mold discovery and its making me sick).... but I am trying to stay positive! And the new space is so nice; I have been watching the light move around the room now that the interior walls are gone and it's lovely. Sitting at the island we'll be able to see out windows to the E, SE, and W... all nice views, too. Pretty cool.
