My rose bushes have gotten way too big!
Comments (12)Wow - I had never seen Cass' article on pruning teas. It is a keeper! I agree with the others above that your DdB is NOT "way too big" - it is the size it is supposed to be, and is happy being. I have two DdBs, and both of them are 7-8 ft tall. So, I echo the above question - why do you think it is too big? If it is in the wrong location for a tea (almost all of which will get at least 7 x8 ft tall and wide), can you move it to a better location? You will not like the result if you try to prune it for size. Jackie...See MoreIs my island workable or too big for kitchen scale?
Comments (17)cooki1268: It's from AYA kitchens 2009 winter catalog/magazine. Here's the link, but it's a huge pdf. I think it's page 12. We're not going with their cabinets, but I did love that picture (gotta find those stools!) www.ayakitchens.com/media/.../AyA_Inspired%20Design2_sm.pdf Thanks to all the other smart and objective advice givers! I'll show my current floor plan, which will help you all see where the doors lead to: We added the wall and opened up the basement stairs to close off the family room from the front door. We also changed the sliding glass door into a picture window and added the side garden door. We face west so we get a ton of light from the back windows and garden door. There's also a silly 40" raised breakfast bar behind the D/W. To answer some of florantha's questions: you can see my current kitchen layout does curve into a "U." I was trying to limit that for 2 reasons: not going to invest in a CD fridge and hate to see the fridge sticking out into the kitchen. As well, also dislike that dead corner between the fridge and stove. One cook household, and we do eat at home most of the time. Two kids that like to help with baking. I was trying not to move walls, windows, sink, etc., simply to put my money into cabs and counters. Need seating for 4 regularly, but have a large dining room table for bigger dinners....See MoreIs my island too big for my space?
Comments (13)Yes, I got to 42" by adding the 24" and 18" cabinet widths of cabinets 8 and 10. And yes, there will be a panel on the "dining room" sides of cabinets 7 and 9, the living room side of cabinet 10, and kitchen side of cabinet 8. I didn't think about the 1" overhang on the working sides of the island, thanks! I've seen the recommended minimum overhang for counter height seating is 15", and we "field tested" some of the kitchen displays at IKEA. None of them were 15" (two were between 11" and 13") and they didn't feel narrow or awkward even for my DH who is 6'1". I was hoping to save an 1"-1.5" there if possible. This home was built in 1952, and we learned after our first winter in the house last year that the exterior walls are not insulated... We've been told by one contractor that he can install a header and remove the studs, so we're planning on recessing about 3"....See MoreIs the kitchen island too big?
Comments (48)Do I think a 10’ by 4.5’ island is too big in general? No; it’s what I actually have in my kitchen. I do, however, think its too big in your kitchen, as evidenced by the small aisles. I also think that 12” isn’t a sufficiently comfortable overhang... you want more like 15”. And I definitely would feel better if there were supports under the overhang. But, that ship has sailed. Your island is in, and unless you have an unlimited budget, it is what it is. Your finishes are pretty, and probably no one (except is TKOs) would ever even notice any of these things. Auntthelma, your countertop looks to be only about 5’ long, and presumably has countertop support on the wall side. It‘a not really the same....See MoreJulie Crafton
