Anyone else growing or planning to grow exotics?
Comments (34)Cat....I think I stick to tried and true entirely too much. I think I should be trying to find something a little different to grow like you and Bill. I've never heard of guinea hen flowers. I do like toad lilies but I tried one and it didn't make it through my winter. I hope you will post photos later. Bill...I never saw a slug in my yard until last year. We had a lot of rain that wouldn't let up and they started showing up. Where do they come from, out of nowhere? [g] You remind me of me... when I can't sleep in the summer, I will get up and go out in my pjs with the flashlight and a paper cup and look for earwigs, which I hate! They seem to love me for some reason. Just the same I enjoy being out there at that hour. You get to see all the night creatures and some of the fragrant plants make the trip worth it. And if there is a moon out, a warm breeze and it's very quiet, it's almost magical! And you can't see all your mistakes at night. [g]...See MoreAnyone else do this?
Comments (10)Gldn, I thought I would give this a bump in case others were not checking it. I think you have a really happy color palette working in your kitchen. The problem, which I guess you are seeing, is that the green of the perimeter counter and the ice stone of the island looks like a near miss, at least in the photo. I bet it looks a lot better in person, since the perimeter counters are picking up the chips in the ice stone, which we can't see. But a near miss is the impression the photos give, at least to me. Well, this is one of those small disappointments in life, and if you don't want to or can't spend the money to fix it right now, I guess you will have to get your mind around it. Really, it's not a disaster, and certainly doesn't rank with the stress of marriage troubles or a sick child. So try to keep things in perspective, though I imagine that after all the work you have poured into your house, you will need to brood a bit that this didn't go your way. From the choices you have made you strike me as a fun, happy person who doesn't always try to please the crowd or play it safe. Yeah, you could have hired a designer who would have given you a nice, safe kitchen that wouldn't wow or offend anybody-- but what fun is that? I think you are going to have lots of happy, convivial times in your kitchen. If it's any comfort, I do the same as you-- I follow my instincts in interior design, sometimes with good results, sometimes not. Oh, well, for better or worse, my home is uniquely my own! You might want to bring in an interior designer now, though, to see if she can suggest a way to tie the two counters together more, perhaps with window treatments, decor, or art. Anyway, good luck! I hope you make peace with the fact the everything did not turn out just the way you envisioned. You will dwell on this more than anyone else-- remember, it's just counters!...See Moreis anyone else tired of wood flooring?
Comments (61)Most people who don't like wood floors seem to object to dings and dents that occur in wood over time. They also fade, the finish eventually wears off and they have to be refinished. I like the dings and dents, and don't mind when the floors under the chairs look more worn than the rest of the floor. All that does is prove that the house is lived in by humans, dogs, cats and other living things, not ghosts :-) I would worry that a floor that looks "brand new" 20 years after installation would look completely fake in the same way that upholstery covered in plastic slipcovers does. That said, we have considered a wood laminate for our basement and I have put it off for seven years now. It would be an improvement over carpet (in DH's opinion, he hates carpet) but I just cannot talk myself into it. I guess I'm too firmlly in the wood floor camp....See MoreFrank Betz Hyde Park Floor Plan - Has anyone built this plan?
Comments (13)Thank you for your suggestions! You are totally welcome. :-) Although, honestly, I don't feel like I've contributed much, lol! ;-) The land is a little over 1 acre but only 1/3 has been cleared and the remaining is wooded. Ooooh dang, that's nice. <3 I'm in eastern Central Texas, and I'd kill for a heavily wooded neighborhood like yours. I haven’t thought about landscaping the front yet. If I could -- without sounding uppity lol -- please, please, please don't plant a tree right in front of the door! :-D I see this all. the. time. Smaller/medium-szied accent trees (preferably flowering, but stay away from Bradford Pear, lol) to frame the house would look lovely, especially with all the tall trees in the back. I also love the look of a front door painted in a cheerful color pulled from flowering perennials in the yard. <3 We did extend the covered deck to 12x20 with stairs and are thinking about a a semi in ground pool in the future The house's orientation will make this perfect! Southern exposure is great for spending time outside on a backyard deck or in a pool....See MoreWestCoast Hopeful
