Help planting a north facing wall, which tropicals?
Comments (9)Great ideas, you guys....thanks! I have a Meyer Lemon in a pot, waiting to go in the ground, where hubby BBQ'd the original Meyer on Father's Day (don't ask!), and that will be next to the concrete border, with a companion lime. Leafy greens in the shade? Hmmm. ok. Was hoping for a permanent planting, as I am forbidden to put a bougainvillia there, it should still be pretty, and hopefully tall. The concrete wall is ugly grey blocks. I've had a cherimoya before, with fruit, and it wasn't hand-pollinated, but that is a tasty tree! Not too shady for it? Good choice. Kitazawa's site looked mighty tasty. I guess $21 isn't too steep to pay for those seeds. Now I need to figure out where all the banana pots should get planted.... thanks again....See MoreClimbers for NorthFacing wall:need help choosing before ARE sale ends!
Comments (11)Thank you, straw. I think Khalid also grows the Cl. Crimson Glory. That one is a 'for sure' purchase. I really want CS, but may put it on a fence to make dead-heading easier. I think I've eliminated Felicia and Blossomtime for now due to sun issues. I really just want them all, but it's too much $$$! : ( I'm planning an arbor, but don't know how soon I can clear out that area, so I'll just wait and maybe get those along with parade later, but shipping is a killer. mad gallica on the antique site said I couldn't grow anything on a north wall, but I'm going to try anyway. ARE says Ballerina and Belinda are good for shade and while not as fragrant as I usually like, I can plant others in the front of this very deep sloped bed. I'm more interested in their health. I also decided florentina may be too red and clash with CG. I'm aslo getting Barcelona for the front so that's another colour to deal with. I think it's easier to mix cool pinks than any reds. I'm also getting Gruss an Aachen, Bolero and Molyneaux for elsewhere....See MoreHELP! Need Paint colors for Low-light North Facing Rooms
Comments (7)Did you decide? I'm surprised you find the colour so bad... I actually really like it. It looks very seaside cottage / beachy and it works with the counter tops and back splash I think, which look like sand. If I were you, I'd paint the fireplace bricks the same colour as your trim, and extend the blue into the livingroom. I think it will look great. Good luck!...See Morehelp! Comments (9)The only white paint colors that look "dirty" in a north facing room are white paint colors with the wrong chroma - that are actually, literally "dirty". What most people mean when they say a white is "dirty" is that it's a dull, muted color. Whether you use the word dirty, dull or muted, they all speak to the same dimension of color which is chroma. The meme "white paint colors won't come to life in a north facing room" started with Donald Kaufman. After reading his books it is clear that he doesn't understand chroma. (Or any of the psychological dimensions of color for that matter.) I'd say Kaufman is the most overrated "color expert" there is but there are plenty more who'd beat him out for the title. For every one person who says you can't use white in a north facing room, you'll find another who will tell you they have and they love it. So who's right? How can BOTH possibly be true? The difference between the ones who love it and the ones who don't, is the ones who love it stumbled on the right white and it worked. To find the right white for your space, you have to have a plan. Step one is ignore the blogs, ignore all the stupid crap on Pinterest. Start with this list. Get chips of the colors with a Chroma value less than 0.40. If it's more than 0.40, don't bother. I don't care if it's "warm" or "cool" blah, blah, blah. Doesn't matter. In a north facing room you either have to have a little chroma or a lot of chroma. Has absolutely nothing to do with LRV. It goes south when the pitch of chroma is wishy-washy not too clean yet not too colorful. You gotta have one or the other. A clean white or a colorful color for a north facing room. Just because you have a plan to partner the right pitch of Chroma with the inherent light you have to work with doesn't mean you're guaranteed to like it, btw. But it gives you better odds than randomly, haphazardly trying a bunch of colors. I'd start with BenM's White, SW's Extra White and PPG's Delicate White. (line 'em up in that order)...See MoreChristine Hintlian
