Need Help with Living Room Paint Color, Rug and Misc
Hi Houzzers, we recently received amazing advice from here which transformed our living space so I thought I start a new thread to help my in-laws with their living room. I am limited on what we can change in here (it’s not my house and they have different taste) but I can guide them on wall color, rug for the sectional, coffee table, pillows/throw, and floor lamp.
I don’t have current pictures because they are redoing the floors right now and can’t get in. They have an older home but the living area has been opened up and it’s one large room. To the left there is brown leather sectional and recliner facing a black granite fireplace/tv. To the right there is a large cherry dining table facing a large cherry with black granite kitchen, they also have a huge island (cherry also). Floors are golden oak as pictured and they will be refinished same color. Lots of dark items so we need to lighten it up. Need to match current grey and white curtains too.
What wall color do you suggest? I want to make sure we don’t accentuate the yellow from the floors.
What rug would go here by the sectional?

Comments (19)@ginatay124 I completely agree about the pillows. There is a throw in the basket under the coffee table, but it’s an ehhh one. The coffee table is fairly new but I did buy it used to refinish the top. I have a qt. of Urbane Bronze and I need to sand and paint it. Previously we had an upholstered ottoman. It is now downstairs because of water cups spilling on it, etc. Our daughter is 8 so this is just easier for now. Floor lamp is a definite yes but clueless there. My husband has said repeatedly we need one, but i don’t know what style goes and does’t look like an afterthought. Any ideas? We also will need new curtains because those are off white/beige. 3 years agolast modified: 3 years agoI am finding it difficult to get a feel for the space. The yellow cast comes from the floor and the lighting. Changing all the bulbs to LEDs in 4000K will mimic sunlight and keep colors true. IMO gray for walls is not a good choice with what they have. I would do a nice soft gray/green for the walls and get new drapes in that same hue , maybe the drapes could be a gift.I love blue accents with dark furniture , robins egg blue is really nice .Gray Wisp from BM is a nice wall color it is the color in the bedroom pic.

3 years agolast modified: 3 years agoThey can change bulbs to daylight bulbs and then see if they still want to change the paint. I think the current color is ok. If they want to change, a warm white for the walls. Nothing with grey. BM’s Ballet White is a nice, versatile color. BM’s Swiss Coffee is another one they can sample. I recommend BM’s Natura Line.

This rug is just one idea. I will look for some other possibilities. If they decide to order any rugs online - a good idea is to order a sample - or if they can’t get a sample, they can buy the smallest size, so if they don’t like the rug, and/or the rug doesn’t work in the actual space, they don’t have to send back a huge rug.freedomplace1

3 years agolast modified: 3 years agoThere is nothing wrong with their floors. There is nothing wrong with yellow and gold. If you do not understand and/or like the wood and colors, you really cannot help them.
They would absolutely need a warm white for the walls. Not a cool white. They have a house full of warm wood. And I gave you some warm white paint options in my comment above.
It also looks like a house full of children in these pictures, and the best coffee table to have with children is an ottoman style. It is also on trend and has been for a while, and it is a style that would work in their space.
With what I can see of the sectional shape and style, I think maybe a large square shape for ottoman.
