A 6" by 12" reveal isn't going to show us much. I can tell the slatted subfloor sits below the two layers of hardwood. You will need to find a floor vent or a cross section of the original wood floor to see if there is enough wood left on the floor to do a sand/refinish. You need 3mm of wood ABOVE the tongue to achieve a sand/refinish.

Go ahead and find the cross section and measure the wood above the tongue. Make sure you use a measuring tape that has mm on it.

Certainly looks like a 1911 floor to me...

Thanks everyone, once I have more time, I do some lead testing on the paint covering the floor to see if I can pull up the laminate safely. I‘ll go ahead and measure above the tongue as well, fingers crossed it’s thick enough to refinish.

Those red oak floors looks to be in perfect shape. I would junk the click lock and refinish the solid underneath. You possibly, might need to do some work on the baseboards. Once you scrap the shoe base.

But why did they cover the original? Had to be something they were covering up, the good news is that oak is easy to match.

It's most likely a budget issue. Refinishing would mean they had to hire a pro = $$$. Click-locks is a simple DIY project = $.

They look like red oak. Our 1930’s house has them throughout including the kitchen. We removed 80’s linoleum and kitchen floor was in perfect condition underneath, just sanded and redid them and they are lovely. Sometimes it’s better they covered the floors as it preserves them in good condition. Maybe they aren’t hiding anything, just followed trends at the time they lived in the house. Hope they’re in good condition and you can refinish and enjoy’!

Thanks everyone, I actually asked the neighbor today who has been next door for 40 + years what he knew about the house and if he had seen the floors before they got covered over. He said that in the past 10 years a family came in and put down all the laminate. However, the man who lived here before lived here for most of his life and had everything covered in carpet so I’m hoping that’s good and it protected the wood. I also removed a piece from the first floor and found what I think is face-nailed oak strip flooring. I wonder why face-nailed flooring on one floor and t & g upstairs.

Those are surface nailed floors. You probably don't have much left on them. You would have an easier time sanding/refinishing the engineered hardwood sitting on top of them (the dark wood on top).
