Prune Spindly Own Root in the Summer?

last modified: 3 years ago

I have an own-root Belinda's Dream band hardening in a pot.

It's been growing but it is still spindly and I need it to be sturdier for fall planting in the ground.

Can I prune some of those stems right now so it will grow thicker? I know mid-summer is not time to prune but I am thinking this own-root might benefit from repeated pruning - a bit now, a bit in January when it will be in the ground. I am not expecting blooms at this stage anyway.

I'd also be happy to see some of the leaves go as they got scorched from some insecticide I applied when the JP-s were driving me crazy. I can bring a picture later when the blazing sun will go away.

Thank you so much for any opinions.
