Propagation by Root Pruning and Root Cuttings

We're talking about propagation in Token's thread on Growing Your Garden.

Another propagation method not often discussed is Root Pruning -- much success for little effort on certain plants.

Here's how I propagate Gaillardia sometimes:

Take a narrow shovel and plunge it straight down into the soil close to the plant. Don't girdle the plant, just one or two cuts. In time, new little plants will grow from the severed roots. Fleshy rooted plants root easily by this method.

I use American Horticultural Society Plant Propagation as my reference on all methods. Trial and error is the best teacher in one's own garden.
