Separate plumbing for softener and RO system?

I am building a new house and planning to have a salt-based whole-house softener and an under-sink RO system for drinking faucet and refrigerator. A friend mentioned that he built separate plumbing for the RO system that doesn't go through the softener. The reason is that the softener adds sodium that the RO system cannot completely remove.

I cannot find any online resources that suggested this as a solution. In fact, all articles suggested that the softener protect the RO system, so I am wondering. Is this good to do? My area's water hardness is roughly in the 200-300 range (there are two sources of water).
