Can you mount the TV on the wall so it’s not in a corner? Could you position the couch in front of the fireplace, but a couple of feet forward of it? Then you could put 1-2 chairs on the sliding door wall and on the opposite wall. Would give a lot of seating options. Or you could do a sectional with the chaise on the full wall side and a couple of chairs on the sliding door side.

To tone down the busyness, don't do a patterned rug or do one with a very small pattern that won't show dirt as much as a solid.A patterned rug only creates another focal point. Choose warmer colors, not grey/blues to go with the wall and floor.

Try a light that doesn't contrast with the ceiling but blends in. Lots of kids? You may want to have a hugging lighted ceiling fan.

I think you are very much on the right track with your current layout, I would make a few tweeks, place the tv on the wall opposite the fireplace, similar to where you have it but not an angle, put it on a long console that will take up most of the space on that wall, console if possible be floating or open at the bottom, something like the pics below. keep sofa where it's at and then add a couple swivel chairs where you have the current chairs and then possible a couple more smaller size chairs flanking the fireplace, add a narrow rectangular coffee table, some side tables and lighting.

Thank you all so much for the comments! I love these suggestions- all sorts of good points I hadn’t considered. Anyone else - please chime in. We’ll rethink our color choices and the rug pattern and probably put the tv on the wall opposite the fireplace. I really like the console table, wall mount idea above. Does it make sense to do an extra long sofa (4 seats instead of 3) against the interior wall or will that be too much and stretch things out the wrong way?

I think a 4 seat sofa will be too long for the space, especially since you will need side tables and some empty breathing room

What colors or wood tones should the tv console or floating stand be? I’m guessing it would need to be different enough from the pine walls as I won’t be able to match them.

I like the idea of a floating stand or console, but what about the heating vent? It looks like radiant heat. Haven't had that since I lived in PA a million years ago and didn't really pay attention to how close furniture can go to it or over it as a floating stand would. I think it's a good idea, just don't want it to cause any issues.

I would suggest doing the TV console in a contrasting color from wall color, you mention lightening things up with blue, grey, white, yellow, so maybe a white console, dont know your style, but I like the idea of bringing in a bit of a modern feel tomorrow with the very rustic feeling walls
