Furniture Design Dilemma living room

2 Focal points on same wall in living room

Hi There, my house is open concept and under 800 sf. I'm thinking of purchasing a sectional and not sure if it will work in my space with 2 focal points on the same wall. I was thinking of moving the tv closer to the fireplace making the walk way in front of the closet bigger but not sure if I should keep the brown leather couch and get a smaller love seat or go with a large sectional. any advice would be much appreciated.

I think I would have one couch and two chairs. A couch in front of the fireplace and two chairs in front of the TV OR chairs in front of the fireplace and a couch in front of the TV. Depends on how many you want to be able to sit. Put tables and lamp appropriately for the furniture you decide. Are you saying your whole house is under 800 sf? Or this room is 800sf? Then the less furniture the better. IMO sectional no.

Thanks. I never thought of using two chairs.... I like to say I live on a boat - the whole main level is just under 800 sf.

Low back sofas and small footprint swivel chairs. Maybe have a stack of cushions on the hearth- can be utilized for "bench" seating next to fireplace or thrown on the ground for extra floor seating softness

Well, let’s get you unstuck! So when you have a long, narrow room, you would want to break it up into “zones” depending on how you live and your family’s needs/wants. I created 3 zones-living, office, lounge/gaming/crafts/puzzles area. I moved the tv in between the windows so it is opposite the fireplace and you no longer have competing focal points with the two sofas facing each other. The round table in between the two chairs could be an adjustable height coffee table(they have ones now that can go to dining height) so that give you a lot of flexibility on how that area is used. If you have young children, that could be a play area.

Putting it against the window might be an option. I'm not sure if having a light source behind the TV will make it hard to watch though. What's your experience with that? Regarding, mounting above the fireplace, I have more than just a single cable box. I have a receiver, a Playstation and a power conditioner. I also have floor standing speakers which can't be hidden. One other option I've been considering is having a partially backless sofa. It doesn't fully unblock the fireplace but makes it more visible. Here's an example:

I would not want my back to the FP either. I would look for smaller scale pieces. Nothing puffy. You also may not have the space for reclining pieces. You have a lot of knickknacks between the green piece and the white book shelf. I would cull your collection. I would consider removing some of the shelves in the built in to accommodate the TV. 2 chairs and a table in front of FP. Sofa facing built ins if TV is there and 2 chairs by the windows. All chairs should be swivel. Please draw a floor plan to scale on graph paper marking all windows, doors, FP etc Then post it here in comments make sure it is dark enough so that we can read the measurements
