Brick Home w/New Roof Needs New Soffit & Fascia -- WHAT COLOR??

We are putting a new shingle roof (Estate Grey color) on our small brick home. We want color advice for the soffit, fascia, window trim, shutters, and concrete porch landing and steps. We are leaning towards shades of grey. Was thinking the wrought iron handrail could be painted black. HELP! We do not have a lot of money and want something that will make this small house POP! We are going to begin by pressure washing the front entrance--hoping to get rid of the green mold/mildew that is ever-present in our climate! Thanks, ya'll!

I would do a soft white on all the trim. I would paint the concrete pad a light gray. Get a paint with texture in it so it is not slippery. I like your idea for a black iron railing. It's classic.

The double and triple windows are not right for shutters. So you might as well not have any.

Get white gutters and paint the leaders an earthy red so they don't show up. Get over sized ones.

I know you didn't ask but I would lime wash that brick. You have a charming home that IMO is overwhelmed by the pattern of the brick.

All the colors are in a very tight value range. My guess is the old roof color was darker than the new one, and that's contributing to your feeling like the new very middle of the road roof color was a mistake. All the elements on their own are perfectly lovely. The house is perfectly lovely. The landscaping is perfectly lovely. It's just it's all bleeding together, and nothing is defined. The brick stays. They roof stays. All you can do is experiment with lighter/darker trim color, door color and shutter color. It's going to be like going to the eye doctor. . . 'which is better a or b'. "It sounds kind of silly, but it looks like it belongs in front of a more contemporary house. It's too modern for my house! " I find this a very odd notion :-) There is nothing particularly contemporary in style about a Japanese maple. They have been planted in Japan for thousands of years. With the right complimentary plantings, there is a cultivar suitable for any style of architecture! I would opt for a JM over messy, deciduous ornamental grasses any day of the week!! Especially for an entry garden. "If weed killer was sprayed, you can’t plant anything or will have to replace dirt around each planting." Just an FYI but this is not at all true. Most herbicides/weed killers retain minimal viability in the soil - they have to interact with growing plant tissue/foliage to be effective - and you can generally replant the area within a couple of days. The product label will always provide this information.

Gray roof is good. I would not go with the black trim. Black paint and even black metal fades or oxidizes and shows spider webs, dust and damage more than lighter colors. Maybe a gray-blue or gray-green trim? To me, cream siding close to the brick color would be good with an interesting trim color, but it would have to be a good match. And maybe paint the stone in front by the trellis the same cream. There is a school of thought that garage doors should recede, so match the siding, but your's are front and center so you may as well make them look interesting. There is the concern of maintenance requirements on exposed wood garage doors, though.

I did not provide enough information and also my photos were not detailed enough to show that the actual (brand new) WINDOWS (from Window World) are NOT the same color as the old painted wood surrounding them. We think it will be impossible--and not look particularly good--to paint the wood to "match." They are a shade of beige, but it appears to have a slight undertone of green to it. We wanted to keep the shutters to add more color, but I get your point and appreciate your feedback!

I'm currently seeking a quote to lime wash the brick, although to be honest, we probably cannot afford to do that. And although I know what you mean by the brick overwhelming the house, it is what it is. What if the painter I hire doesn't really know enough about application of the limewash treatment and ruins the brick? I've read just a little on the subject, and it sounds like it could be a nightmare! If done CORRECTLY, I think it would be beautiful.

Shutters look skimpy. Brick is busy. Charcoal, gray, bronze and white all would work.

So are you suggesting we drop the shutters or get larger shutters? Would you lime wash the brick?
