Well, there is a law in certain areas on how many roof layers you can have. We have one asphalt layer however we do have other layers (not asphalt). Legally we can not have more than two asphalt roof layers on our house. So, even if we had two layers of asphalt we could add the steel roof over them. (you just can't add another asphalt layer) We made the decision to keep the asphalt roof because it would be thousands more dollars to rip off the old roof and dispose of it and we are not required to rip off the old roof. Ripping off the old roof, according to our research, would not benefit us or extend the life of the new roof. Many people around here have metal roofing now and luckily I have seen them being installed. Every one I have seen installed has been installed over the original asphalt roofing. Most likely people did this as a cost saver. This is one of the benefits of metal roofing. The cost of the metal roof is nearly the cost of a complete tear-off plus the new installation of an asphalt roof. if we had to do a complete tear-off we would not be able to afford a metal roof. There are two types of metal roofing. Ones that can be installed directly on the roof deck and those that are meant to be spaced between the roof deck w/ purlins. These roof are more rigid and usually cost more. We wanted the metal roof to be installed over purlins because this leaves an air gap = more insulation for our house. If you need repairs to the roof deck you would have to remove the shingles in that area of the house. Maybe that is why your husband is in favor of the tear-off?? So, we came to the decision to not do the tear-off because: -it was more affordable -not required -did not harm the house or new roof -renee

You're quite welcome. There is always a solution - or at least a way to make it better - with color. Especially exterior. Funcolors I went back to SW store. I compared the Creamy SW 7012 and the Dover White SW 6385 to the brick. As you suggested the Site White does nothing to bring balance. Whereas the creamy and dover you picked make it all come together. How did you know that? I know Site White well. It's a pale gray - it's not white and a pale gray wouldn't relate to the brick in any way. It relates to the roof but we want to make choices that creates visual bridges and enhances color relationships with the brick, not the roof. You have a cool, neutral color tolerance/preference and those are the colors you gravitate toward. Site White is a similar kind of color choice as the roof color that started the whole thing. Dover and Creamy are very close, I think you see color on broader terms now and can make the call as to which one, Creamy or Dover, relates to the brick the best. Dover is a great ext. trim color. Funcolors above you touched on putting a faux finish on the textured aluminum garage door. What product would you suggest to accomplish it. I would like to explore that possibility. That would be up to the pro finisher you hire to do the work. I honestly don't know because I don't do finishes. It's also similar to regular paint product choices. I don't ever tell a painter what products to use exterior. As long as it's a top brand and best grade I make color work on their product terms. Because the pro painter is the one who has to work with the product and guarantee the job. Not me. You recommended I need an orange color to make things work. Please see the attached link for a sample of the walnut color. What is your advice regarding the best color to work with. If I were there to do it for you, I'd have the SW guys mix a custom stain. Their instruction would be to mix up something that looked as if it were comprised of 50% Walnut and 50% Cherrywood. Something that looked like their SW Wood Classics Warm Chestnut or Cinnamon. But you're on you're own and Walnut is a perfectly fine choice. It does have the right undertone - might be a little too dark brown. . . but I'm being picky and a perfectionist.

Where are they moving to, in FL? I was going to suggest-if anywhere near Clearwater? There's an awesom Xmas store here-you could get them a gift card so they can go choose a tree sized to fit their new home. Then, procedd with each family sending them their box of personal ornaments-1 box to arrive each week up until 2 weeks before Xmas? (they'll want to enjoy it decorated for a couple weeks). I did not provide enough information and also my photos were not detailed enough to show that the actual (brand new) WINDOWS (from Window World) are NOT the same color as the old painted wood surrounding them. We think it will be impossible--and not look particularly good--to paint the wood to "match." They are a shade of beige, but it appears to have a slight undertone of green to it. We wanted to keep the shutters to add more color, but I get your point and appreciate your feedback!
