Comments (21)Tessiess, thank you for your input. I used alfalfa pellets for the first time this spring, and upon closer observation, I have not noticed any major differences that I can definitely attribute to its use; unfortunately I continued to use my normal March cocktail which could account for a lot of what I saw in terms of growth etc. I research, research, research and many experts warn against the use of alfalfa as it is believed to raise the pH, which is the opposite of what I want for my high alkaline soil. Years ago, I attempted to grow Blanc Double de Coubert. I had just began rose gardening and I am sure its demise is gardener error. I am happy to learn that you have had luck with rugosas; with very little intervention, which is probably key to its success? Now if I can just find someone who has had success with Paul Neyron to discover what the issue is with as so many gardeners seem to despise it.... Lyn, you are so correct. Las Vegas has its name because it means the meadows. This land was once very fertile and wet. Generally, the soil in Las Vegas has inorganic minerals, but is very low in organic compounds . We aspire to have soil that is 5% organic compounds but have to amend a lot to get there. We also amend the soil to lower the pH....See MoreRose Gardening Is Expensive! What Are Some Ways Of Saving Money?
Comments (23)So much great advice! Thank you Ingrid and Michaelg! I know someone who goes to a feed store for horses. I will tell him to pick me up some 40lb bags of alfalfa and I can collect leaves from the local parks to mulch with. Checking Ashdown and Vintage for the sales, too. Thanks Diane_nj, Moroseaz, Silverkelt, Karl_bapst_rosenut, Predfern, Terryjean, Sammy, Jacqueline3, Roselvr and Canadian_rose for the wealth of info.!!! You all have made me realize that compost makes the garden world go 'round. Also thanks Hoovb and Particentral, for putting things in perspective. I suppose it's all relative and there are other hobbies that can be more expensive, but creating a gardening budget will help me get to the point of being wealthy enough to fly airplanes as a hobby, keep show grade koi and collect expensive art. Now, dealing with show dogs is not a hobby I would pursue. :) Juliet...See MoreRose Rosette Virus.....
Comments (2)This is something of a mystery disease, by the way. Not really a virus, but not anything else, as far as I know. The reason why removal of the entire plant is suggested is very simple. The pathogen can be transmitted from a sick plant to healthy ones via a type of mite. By allowing infected plants to remain in your collection, you put the others at risk. Best to make absolutely sure that this is what your roses have, and then bite the bullet. Removal of only the parts of the plant that are symptematic does not resolve the issue. Good luck!...See MoreMy rose garden this year
Comments (64)In the Spring I dug up the mini rose bed and replanted. I finally got around to removing the grass just outside the hardware cloth fence. The fence keeps the bunnies away. A photo taken yesterday. The replanting actually helped me in the rose show--Irresistible won Queen and Heather Sproul took King!...See Morevesfl (zone 5b/6a, Western NY)
