Off centre bedroom wall dilemma

EDIT: Okay we moved things around again! I like it much better and there’s still room for my wheelchair on the right hand side.

It doesn’t look that much better on camera but it does in person! Thank you!

We may paint the walls white at some point. Not sure. Either way, gonna get some lighter coloured curtains. I have a light blue duvet cover that I can put on my white duvet that will also detract from the window.

My husband and I moved apartments 7.5 months ago. All this furniture was purchased for our old apartment. We’re struggling with function vs design. We’ve had the bed on every wall. We liked it in the middle wall, but I use a wheelchair and my chair doesn’t fit. I can’t pull my chair up to the bed with the furniture that way. The opposite way means I’d have to sleep on the left side of the bed. I don’t want to do that. The curtains are longer... we just had them like that to see how it would look if we hemmed them. I never open them because it’s too much fabric. We’ve got two sets of blackout curtains because there’s a bright light right outside our window. We’ve also got a portable a/c unit in the right side of the window, but it my husband moved it to the living room before I took the pic. The room feels cramped overall.

The room feels cramped because it is small! Can’t change the size....only thing you cN do is put bed centered on the window wall...get a long drapery rod and hang it centered on the wall also starting from right side of window...

You create the illusion that the window is bigger and centered..than move bed over centered in front of window......use grommet top panels so they are easy to open and close..install a room darkening rod that turns in on each side to keep light out.

This is a rough drawing of our old house basement. The left back bedroom was already in place along with the central furnace and toilet but it was open to the rest of the space. We had the same problem of dealing with making decent size bedrooms and decided that a jog was the only way to deal with what we had to work with, without moving the furnace. I only mentioned egress because of the age of your house and you just said you had windows. We had the original basement windows just cut down and didn't change their location. We also left the smaller basement windows where the were. It doesn't really feel like a basement at all. Our egress windows are on the south side of the house. We made a common planting garden with landscape timbers incorporating steps instead of using window wells. I wanted to look at something nicer.

Off-centered walls often make spaces more interesting imo. Just pretend it is centered. I have one of those in my bedroom too. Can you post a photo of the space?

Still a work in progress but hoping to have it finished this weekend. We tried a long arm lamp from CB2 and it just wasn’t enough to balance out the window alone. We’re going to do a gallery wall behind the nightstand on the right. We also hung bamboo blinds on both windows (we have another asymmetrical window on the white wall). I will post it once it’s done so you can see if you like it or not. I really did not want to cover the window completely - I’d rather have the light than the design balance. To be continued…

Will you ever have ceiling fans instead of decorative fixtures? For fans, I'd have them 2' off the wall. In our custom home's secondary bedrooms (11'x13'), we have four 6" LED, 2' from the walls and a ceiling fan in the middle. This way the lights are far enough away from the blades and don't cause the nausea-inducing strobe effect that can happen if lighting is too close to the fans. (It happens slightly in our small 10'x12' office/playroom since we only put two 6" LEDs on the 12' length on either side of the fan.)

I was thinking the same thing. Especially if you don't open the curtains anyway, let them hang all the way down over the window. Then pull the bed off the wall so it's as centered as you can get and still have sufficient room for your wheelchair.

I’m thinking of painting everything white and putting blinds then some semi sheer white curtains.

I like your idea of blinds and sheers. And I think once you get art on the walls and other decor in place, it’s going to look very different (lovely and cozy). Can you do a rug, or would you rather not because of the wheelchair?

I really like your headboard and the floors ... good start to what will be a pretty room. :)

If you haven’t already, google ‘bedroom off center window’ — so many pictures of nice rooms come up. It might give some inspiration.

ETA: Would it be possible to put the dresser in the corner, or would it be too big? It’d allow you to move the bed over a bit, but still have room for your chair. I have my dresser in a corner, it worked out better that way. But I cant tell from the photos if yours would fit.

Thank you! The headboard was a splurge, but I love it. I have googled off centre bedroom window. That’s how I came up with the blend-window-into-wall concept.

The dresser could be moved over if the bed was moved a little more to the right, but we’ve got our a/c unit there. :/

Paint the wall the same color as your curtains and hang something above your head board OR have curtains running the entire length of your wall

Can you add a sturdy shelf to the wall/corner to the right of the window and put the air conditioner up there to get it off the floor and out of the way? Or just move the dresser closer and put the AC on top of it?
