Design advice for tiny kitchen!
Comments (82)I love your kitchen. Love the height, the arches, the cab color! For a DC kitchen, it is very nice. ITA on brass hardware. It will look great with the countertops. ITA the micro has to go. I love the Fagor pullout hoods common in Europe. Here is my fav -- which I've actually used -- available from AJM: And yes, I think the MOP backsplash, or some sort of color is needed. I love wallpaper on the backsplash -- something g geometric, perhaps, in earth tones. Another option would be a solid glass backsplash. Those were trending for a while but never hugely caught on. But it gives the drywall a sheen, and good protection. Again, it is a lovely, lovely kitchen, and needs very little, IMHO....See MoreLate 80's home: interior paint color and design help sought
Comments (30)Thanks for your kind words about the house. :) awm03, I believe you're correct that this house is post-MCM. It was listed as such on Zillow. "Just noting, though, that both the dining and front rooms seem to be visible from the family room, so I'm wondering about visual...symmetry with one very dark and the other very light. Also, painting the dining room dark will make that one set of windows especially dominant during the day." hamamelis, good points! "Curtains aside, they also seem to be asking me for a console or some such thing under the single panes..." I guess that would be possible if the console or some such sat far enough from the wall so that the drapes could move behind it. "Regarding the glass and mirrors, it occurs to me that the front room would change light and character dramatically with all of it gone. And that it can be beautiful when well done and lit." Excellent point. I think I'm not liking it now because there are so many things on it. I was looking at the listing photos and I much prefer it with a few select pieces of art. "Why is there what looks like a little wall sticking out in the middle, though, with the glass continuing on?" It does have a little wall that divides the glass area into two sections. It's just decorative and has been there since the house was designed - no doorway removal. justerrilynn, I like those styles of rugs. I've been eyeing them up on Overstock. I'm going to mull over the light-colored leather sofa idea. My set is getting older, but it's still in good condition, so it might be a hard sell to the BF. Lighter colors and a more MCM design would fit better in this house. I think after digesting all of the advice given, that I'll stick with light, neutral colors and hold off on the deep blue dining room. I suspect that a new coat of paint is going to go a long ways towards making things seem fresh and inviting. Thank you!...See MoreKitchen Layout Advice Sought
Comments (49)Hi again Wolfgang -- Are you and your wife feeling the tidal wave of options comin' at ya? GW has no shortage of creative minds! This got long.... Hearing that the double sets of french doors have yet to be installed does shift things a bit for me. [And I know only too well the thrill of finding and buying something era-appropriate...and then realizing it won't work as well as another option. Luckily the finds often do work and become very special parts of a house!] Were I you, I would continue to explore options that put the "working" part of the kitchen in the main space, and saving the 8 x 9 area for other purposes. For me part of this exploration would include holding off on any doors in that area -- make it a dead-end space to eliminate it as a traffic path -- and considering whether I wanted above-the-counter windows for the most function or old-house low windows that are *almost* like having the FR doors. I think one of the hardest things about living with kids is that the child you're living with today is basically a different one in 6 months/year! Their independence and needs change so rapidly. So you've got to design from toddler-hood on. Depending on answers, you could make that 8 x 9 include various combos of the following: an eating area, pantry, small utility closet (for vacuum etc), mudroom-lite (kid outdoor dress/drop) zone, lots of drawers with additional counter space etc. When I visit my SoCal relatives the kids are in/out in/out in/out constantly. Not a bad thing at all! But if they had 2 sets of doors like you're contemplating ai yi yi there would be a real sense of "underfoot-edness." In conclusion: FWIW, I lean toward keeping the major elements of your proposed draft (sink and stove placement, give or take a few tweaks) but with the frig/freezers built into this streamlined zone by the DR. [Again, I know you don't like the frig there now!]...See MoreSand Mountain House Floor Plan Advice
Comments (23)Heather, I really love your ideas about the master bedroom. I really didn't think about my master door going outside right onto the patio where we will have family. We have a small family and liked the idea of being able to go outside from our master (maybe to a hot tub way down the road) but I'm not sure I will like that going right to the common patio. I love the fireplace idea! Our first builder talked us out of it in our current house, but I really wish we would of. Thank you for the reminder! Yeah, I'm seeing a lot of commonality between the laundry and the mudroom. Lots of discussion on how to separate the laundry from the pantry, mudroom, etc. I really don't have an answer for that one. Definitely difficult. We are sort of stuck having the back face east. Our lot is more narrow than deep. But our current home faces the same direction and our summer guests usually appreciate that we have lots of shade from the house in the backyard. We have really hot summers but we still get lots of sunlight in from the back of the house in the other seasons. Thank you so much for all you input. :)...See Moreflopsycat1
