Mid-Century Brick Ranch Patio Shade

We have a mid-century brick ranch with a lower profile roof. We have a back patio that we want to replace with pavers and add a simple awning or shade cover. The space is strange because one side is the roof, one side is the sunroom and one side is the workshop. We need ideas for shade covering that will sit above or below the eaves.....has anyone else had this issue? Does any one have ideas?

I think you are better off with freestanding shade ... not linked to the house. Though you could span a path through the separation with some type of custom awning, if necessary.

Just curious why are you ripping out the concrete for pavers? I have pavers and can’t wait to replace them with concrete.

I have a hip roof and we put up a sail shade. We would have preferred an awning, but just like your house, there isn’t enough room between the window tops and the roof. I wasn‘t sure how well it would work, but I love it. My kitchen is about 10 degrees cooler now too.

I'm no expert I just know a lot of people are doing cement board around me. I am not sure if they glue then screw and caulk to prevent hiding spaces. Best to check with an expert. However. It can all have the same look with a smooth stucco or other surface and scoring. Here is one with a slight two tone chimney. Not to much but enough to diminish the height a bit .

You are smart to del with all those issues first I like gutters that disappear so the color of the roof would be my choice. The soffits, since the windows will be white I would do the soffits white . I would wait to decide the other color until the new windows are in those will make a big difference in how that space feels. Great house congratulations I love 50”s ranchers I have one. I use solar shades for my west facing windows for heat and UV control but the overhang on the South on my place keeps out the summer sun and allows the winter sun to heat the house .

Thanks guys! I enjoy reading updates, so I had to do my own. :) I must have been dead to think this was an ugly stone wall! I absolutely LOVE IT! What a dang fool I was! Ugh! We are loving the look! We have purchased 9 metal frames. We plan on selecting 9 of our favs and making gallery above the little table in the entryway. We ordered our new storm windows this week. We went with sandstone ProVia storms. That color will be like the mortar in between the brick. Come spring we will get a new (black) charcoal roof, paint the gables, gutters and downspouts in sandstone as well.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Off-white with a bright colored, mid century door was the direction I was leaning, so it sounds like I’m on the right track, @emmarene9, I think the small plants are boxwoods, but I am going to pull those out along with the stones and redo that bed with some more mid-century appropriate, Texas native landscaping - maybe grasses or succulents. And here’s a close up of the iron scrolling that you asked for (dirty and coated in that ugly green paint, but in good shape otherwise).

Hi suedonim75-cheeky name by the way:) the concrete was poured before we moved in and it is a weird shape. The previous owners also stained it a weird peach color. It is only 5 years old and it is already cracking down the middle and sides which you can’t see in the pic. In our CO climate, the pavers seem to work better in adjusting to the weather challenges.

IMO the space where the table is makes no sense unless it is either concrete or pavers.There is no space for a proper awning and until you get the space figured out you will not know where you need shade and what it should be.
