Staining Different Woods - Exterior Doors, Garage Door, Patio Ceiling

We are finishing a whole-house renovation and are finally down to the last few projects. We are about to install a new front door, a new back door, a new wood garage door, and tongue and groove ceiling on the covered front porch and back porch. The problem? It's beginning to look like everything will be done using different wood species, and after everything is stained I want it to look good.

It looks like wood garage doors are most often built with either Western Red Cedar or Douglas Fir. I could probably pay extra for a Mahogany if needed.

The front door we like is unfinished Mahogany. We would stain to preference.

The back door we like is unfinished fiberglass.

Lastly, the tongue and groove patio ceiling planks are typically done with Pine, but we could also use Cedar.

I don't need the stain to match exactly, but I want everything to be similar enough that it looks good.

QUESTION: Will a great painter be able to stain the Garage, Front & Back Doors, and the Patio Ceiling(s) a similar color?

If you use the same species of wood the answer is yes but if all are different it will be near impossible to have a match. The fiberglass will be an issue for sure but if on a side of the house not seen with the others not such a big deal. IMo if the garge door and front door are seen toghether then it would be good for them to match. I actually like painted ceilings in porches but again a close match will probably work on the ceilings.

Thanks for the feedback. I believe I can find the back door and the garage door in the same wood species (they are right next to one another). I've been told that, with some effort, we can get the patio ceiling (likely pine) to stain close (but not exact) to the garage/back doors.

Unfortunately, the front door we like is only available in Mahogany. The only variable that is near the front door is the front porch patio ceiling (again, likely going to be pine). I'm wondering with a lot of experimentation if we can get the Front Door (Mahogany) to stain close to the pine ceiling?

Of course, all of this would be much easier if I could just find a single wood species that is readily available on doors, garage doors and tongue/groove planks???

Thanks again for your comment. I will consider painting the ceiling boards if we can make them match.

I'm not really clear on whether you have to replace your front door or not. Can you continue to use your current door or is it necessary to put in a new one? If it's just the storm door your husband wants, can you find a skilled carpenter to build you one to go one your current door? Then stain it to match, so it disappears. Alternatively, tell your husband you don't want to compromise with "good enough" and will keeping searching until you find "perfect." He may come to love your current door before you track down something you like better. If you must replace your door, there is a lot of choice out there. We used "Rogue Valley" door and it's beautiful and well-made. Although we could not see that exact door, we could see samples of that manufacturer and others at a local millwork supplier. I suggest contacting the manufacturers to find out who within 100 miles or so has samples of their doors. It will be worth your time to make sure you have chosen the right door. Is your NE Nebraska or New England?

Oly - Don't mind sharing at all... Its 3100 sq/ft, 4 br and 3.5 baths. The balcony area is off the bonus room and not the master. Here are some pictures from soon after we moved in so it looks a little bare but truth be told we are still trying to get the place properly decorated! Maggie - thank you very much... I was just trying to find out what company did the shutters so I could find the exact color but wasn't able to get that info. It was one of the color options from the shutter manufacturer so we didn't pick out the paint at home depot or whatever. I'll dig around some more and hopefully get the color name to you. We were looking for that french blue look and think we found just that so we were very pleased.

As you can see, our home is long overdue for an exterior refresh. We plan to tear out the outdated, overgrown boxwoods and replace with fresh landscaping, but that’s another thread… My questions are threefold: What is a good exterior paint color? I do not like the present gray. I was thinking BM Putnam Ivory (sample board on right side of garage) with White Dove for the trim (i.e., porch columns for sure), but am open to suggestions. I will paint the gutters a match as close to the brick as possible (BM Coyote Trail?) so they will hopefully fade away. On the ‘triangle peaks’ on the right side of the house’s roofline, am I supposed to paint the “trim” a different color, or paint it all the body color as it is presently? I’m not sure how to separate which color I paint where (fascia, soffit, body, trim, etc.). What about window trim -- body color or trim color? Please recommend a garage door style. It is hard for me to visualize different styles since there is a two-car and a one-car door and they are at the front of the house – it is such a massive expanse. The attention-getter glass doors instantly become the dominant feature of the house. Is that what you want? If you just want more light in the garage, add more fixtures to the interior lighting and paint the garage interior bright white. Put in a garage door with a row of windows up top. Add a new garage door opener with two light bulbs, too. I suggest you get the landscape pruning crew in to do the major cleanup, then take more photos instead of using google streetview. Painters prefer to have a whole foot of space between the plants and walls. The two story bougainvillea can be tied back while they paint. Sage green walls with white windows would look good. all woods can be matched the same but a highly experienced painting or finishing contractor. I would get the garage doors and TG ceiling in cedar and front door in fir then you have a better chance in matching all the woods in a stain

Great advice. Thank you. Wish you were in Dallas and we would let you handle the staining. I do have a very good painter that I called today. He said if I can get him some samples of the wood he will take it down to SW and work with them until he gets it as close as possible.

They can build the garage in Douglas Fir (for a bit extra) and I think I can even get the tongue and groove in Fir, so it may be possible to do all of it in Fir. I'm gonna see if that works.
