Is the bedding staying? I like it and would pull alight blue from it for the walls. Can the tall chest go on the same wall as the bureau? Pull the night stands away from the bed they look squished and the right could be replaced with a taller one or actually both cold be replaced with lager ones

you have a very nice space to work with and can look lovely. can you take more pics of the room so every wall is shown and we can get an understanding of how the areas relate? also, can you give perspective on how you want to use the sitting area, do you need the office area? you started idea boards but it would be great if you could continue to add some bedrooms that speak to you. my first thought, based on your comment about the bed wall being sad, is that you need larger nightstands, the current ones are too small. I also think you need different art, I would put art above the new nightstands and remove what you have above the bed. heres two ideas, both have mirrors above nightstands and nothing above bed, but you could have art above the nightstands instead. the nightstands are larger too which your room can handle.

The dog ruins bedding on a regular basis - so it probably won’t stay for long 🙄.

Blue is definitely one of the colors - the desk furniture is a gray blue/steel blue? It adds to the darkening of the room.

I don’t have many options to relocate the tall dresser. I just switched the nightstands, because it was really squished, and moved the bed a little to the left. It’s a conundrum.

thank you, very helpful. a few thoughts using current furniture. I would consider moving the tall dresser where the piece with what looks like the rolled top desk is(not the sitting area desk of course)and then move the rolled top desk to one side of the bed and then move the 3 shelf bookcase to the other side of the bed, will need to restyle it . this will help give more presence to the wall with the bed. then put art above each piece.

IMO the first step is a way to close off the office space . A nice set of frnech doors would be perfect. I love that blue piece in the office area I would try to use that in the bedroom instead of there , take the mirror off the other dresser and then paint it and the other high one the same blue as the piece from the office . get rid of the stand between the 2 doors and move that taller dresser there if it fits Get night tables that are much larger along with much beefier lamps maybe with glass bases. Put the cedar chest in the closet and get a bench for the foot of the bed. Forget word “art” . I would move the smaller chest into the office and use that piece from the office for a dressing table with a pretty stool at it.Hang some art above the long lower dresser where you removed the mirror. Then go shopping for some bedding with a matching bedskirt and do what we do for the dog. I have a light weight blanket I put on the bed at night when our 125 lb dog wants to sleep on the bed.I would do some bedding like this and use the pale green for the walls it will work well with the blue of the new dressing table and is very neutral.

Thank you so much for this inspiration! I agree, I clearly need to move that high dresser and beef up the side table scale. It’s key to making the bed wall the star of the show.

looking at your room some more, are you open to painting the room? I would consider a warm white to help brighten it up, also can you open up the shutters in the sitting room just to see how it can bring in more light? the other idea is to change out the fan for a chandelier or a fan with lighting, if you need the function of the fan. it looks like you have a gorgeous chandelier in the bathroom, if I am seeing it correctly, something similar in the bedroom could look very pretty too.

The paint is SW moderate white...I am open, but just finished a ton of drywall repair and painting, of course!
The ceiling fan is 30 years old, the function is precious, but happy to update it with something a little prettier :)
Shutters are also 30 years old. Need the privacy (street facing), and was leaning towards pleated shade that open from top or bottom. The window bench will have a 3” high dark gray seat cushion next week.
French doors are not an option to close off the office space... just doing my best to make it

The triple dresser mirror is on the way out! I was seriously considering that blue on the remaining furniture. I do love it, a lot.

of course, right... I totally understand. before doing any painting of walls, focus on the other elements and then address paint. glad you want to get rid of the mirror above dresser, that will help update the room. also like the idea of shades, but would stick to a simple roman shades vs the shutters in the sitting area. if you decide to paint furniture the blue like the piece in the sitting area, I would keep bedding very simple, feasibly all white and off white with different textures, linen duvet, cotton quilt, with just accents of blue and grey.

So much room to do so many lovely things. I too love the blue piece and would paint your existing furniture to match that.

Thank you all for the wonderful feedback... I knew something was off, I just couldn't get past my own nose and 30 years of familiarity to see that the scale was off balance. I'm also the nerd of the family, and decor is not my strong suite! All of your suggestions are appreciated, more than you know!!!

I really love the colors in this canvas, and I can order it to scale a bit larger than the existing word art. (I need to find a new home for the word art - it was a gift and it has special meaning behind it). It has the colors I'd love to pull out in the blue, but also has some brightness to it. Thoughts... am I moving in the right direction??

love what you chose and the night stand dressers will look stunning in the room. they are a great choice for many reasons but I think they will help make that area less dark as they will shine up the area and bring some bling. love the art too and we can absolutely find another place for the word art. since the word art it is smaller, i would put it in a place that is lower on a wall, below eye level a bit, and on a smaller size wall to help with scale. great job!! time to get off the struggle bus🙃 it takes time to find the right thing.

Really like the nightstands with your headboard and let those be the driving factors in the room’s direction, along with the blue vanity. Will need different lamps and a new ceiling fan to better compliment. I’d also go with simple bedding and layer for more neutral but elegant feel

In regards to furniture placement, looks like you received a lot of suggestions. I think dressers and highboy painted white or restained would work well vs blue and add new hardware. Before you decide, complete all of the other changes to get a better feel of room

To define either area and add interest, you could layer an area rug On bedroom side or office

Look for inspiration pictures and save them. You will start to see components that you are always drawn to and get a sense how the space would feel. It will make it much easier to decide and commit. I’ve done this for every room make over and it really helps. Good luck.

wow, you have been busy. its looking great and 100% agree that the new nightstand and moving the tall dresser away from the sleeping area made such a big difference. the art above the bed is great too. the bench below the window in the office area also made a huge difference. as for the color change for the dressers, I wonder if white will wash out the room a bit as you have a lot of light colors like the wall color and carpet. i still like the idea of using the color of the blue console in the office on other pieces. a darker or brighter color will pop a bit more against the wall color... another idea to bring some more pattern or texture in the room is to use wallpaper on the drawer fronts and paint the rest of the piece, maybe in this case you could paint the piece white.

was thinking about your room some more and wondering if you would like new lamps for the new side tables... i think a blue or green would bring some additional dimension to that side of the room. also, was thinking a rug would also bring some additional dimension. just some thoughts

I think about this room endlessly 🤣. It has been a challenge for 30 years. It was low priority with 4 kids... now I’d like it to be a bit more polished and updated.
Absolutely considering more substantial lamps with color. I was thinking about being in some more green with accessories and plants (that I try not to kill) to brighten it up some.
The rug will be necessary with the new floor. That probably won’t happen until next year, which will test my patience :)

Julie, if you're thinking replacing floors next year, you may want to check to be sure they'll still be available. Floors like laminate and LVP tend to come and go pretty quickly and you don't want them to end up being discontinued when you're ready to replace them. If it's at all possible, I would look into purchasing them ASAP, even if you're not going to be ready to have them installed until next year.
