I Am So Bummed! Aster Yellows Again?
Comments (13)Thanks again bludane, I will call the local extension first thing in the morning and see if they test or send out for testing. I did some more looking on the internet and I think I may have seen one mite on a leaf of the coneflower. I saw a shape very similar to the mite on one of the leaves found on this site. When I saw it under the microscope I looked at it for a long time and dismissed it. http://www.mobot.org/GARDENINGHELP/PLANTFINDER/IPM.asp?code=277&group=48&level=s or more specifically http://www.mobot.org/gardeninghelp/images/Pests/Pest1245.jpg I had mine crushed between two pieces of glass, but it was the same shape and color! You know... different sites are suggesting different methods of treatment. Some sites state that once damage is noticed it too late and that is very hard to treat. They suggest to dig out the plant, but they also suggest to dig out plants within one foot of the infected plant as they say those too might be infected. Then there are sites that say to just remove the affected part and do nothing. Humm.... They do say that the Eriophyid mites are the only mites to transmit viruses....See Moreconeflower- strange green bud. aster yellows??
Comments (6)I had a coneflower with buds looking similar to yours. I finally took a bud, sliced it in half and looked at it under a microscope. I definitely found mites. I could not see the mites just by eye or with a magnifying glass. Of course, this does not rule out aster yellows, but it did make me feel a bit better. I decided to keep that plant. If you do not happen to have a microscope handy, you might be able to take the sample bud to a local group or agency that does have one. If you live near your county extension office (run through your state's land grant university), they might have a plant diagnostic lab. A local university or community college might have a plant sciences/ag department that could look at it. Sometimes even state parks with education centers have microscopes available for community use. A local Master Gardener group might be able to look at it as well. gl whatever you decide to do!...See MoreHow to prevent Powdery Mildew on large Zinnias?
Comments (5)To Ken_adrian: Thanks for the advice, but I am not one to give up on a plant because I had a problem with it for a little while during 1 season. I have dealt with issues with dahlias as well from time to time, like slugs, spider mites and tree hoppers, but I stiIl grow them. I think some things are worth a little extra effort, and its really not that much more effort anyway to be honest. I grew the same variety of zinnias about 2 years prior to last year's powdery mildew, and at that time I had more zinnias in a more shaded area that tended to hold moisture/humidity moreso than this new area does, yet I didnt have any problem with powdery mildew at that time. I dont mind having to take 10-15 minutes 2-3 times a season mixing up some spray solution and coating the plants with a safe, relatively non-toxic spray that helps prevent fungus if it means having 5-6 foot tall flowering plants that continuously flower from June til early November. I will also try to keep them more ventilated. Maybe they were too close last year. But we also had a generally wet first half of summer....See MoreGarlic and Aster Yellows Disease
Comments (0)I recently started a thread in the Vegetable Forum regarding my and many other Minnesota growers' garlic crops being destroyed by Aster yellows this year. I am posting the link to that thread below. I am cross-posting in the pertinent GW forums in the hopes of receiving more input and/or suggestions regarding the subject matter by folks who may be able to help but do not follow the Vegetable Forum. We need all the info/advice we can get in order to get a handle on this disease regarding how to prepare for it, control it, fight it, or to at least minimize its damaging effects, if it occurs again here. I am passing all helpful information on to any Minnesota garlic grower who requests it and is not a member of GW. Please reply to this topic on the main thread in the Vegetable Forum, not here. Thanks for your time and any input. -Tom Here is a link that might be useful: Main Subject Thread in Vegetable Forum...See More- 3 years ago
