FS mason jar sealer?
Comments (8)I use an external vacuum pump, capable of higher vacuums. I also added a big moisture trap so it can seal my pepperoncini peppers in full stregth vinegar. It sure does a great job on pulling a lid on tight. Hard to get off unless its pried off with the opposite end (rounded) of a 'church key'. I picked up several of these high powered vacuum pumps and might offer them on eBay as a good tool for use with the FS canning jar attachments. The FS pump simply can't pull the same vacuum strength. I even fractured some of the square sided FS containers using my pump, as they just can't hold up to that much pressure. The only ones that seem to work well are the rounded containers with domed lids. The ones that look like tapered tapered pails with flat covers also crack, so there, I seal the cracks with a large amount of crazy glue (cyano acrylate) to reinforce the areas. Washed well after it cures....See MoreHelpful tip for using the vacuum jar sealer
Comments (4)Today I went to open a pint jar of homemade playdough that I had sealed this way a few days ago and when I peeled back the tape nothing happened. I had to poke my needle through the hole again to let in the air. I think some playdough must have clogged the hole from the inside. I thought it was interesting that the lid was still sealed too tight to pull off with my fingers. Obviously if the hole is very tiny it takes much less "plugging power" to maintain a seal, so the tinier the hole the better the chance of having a good long term seal....See MoreQuick question re using a Foodsaver to seal WM mason jars
Comments (3)I can't really recommend a certain model because every one of mine have been different and they are constantly changing them, but all worked essentially the same. What I look for: 1. You can use both sizes of bags (8- & 11-inch). 2. Has a jar sealer. I've had a model that held the roll of bags inside and two that didn't. I actually preferred the bags outside to inside. It seemed like it didn't matter which size bag you had in the machine, it was always the wrong one for your needs. I really like the canisters. I used to be able to get them at Wal-Mart, but they don't carry them anymore. The canisters are wonderful for fresh greens - helps keep them fresh much longer. Canisters or jars are a must for things that will stick together if vacuum-sealed in a plastic bag. I purchased a HUGE bag of chocolate chips at Sam's Club many years ago and vacuum-sealed them in user-friendly size bags. Little did I know they would clump together - duh!!! You will find you use it all the time if you have it out and available, not put away. I have a large kitchen rack and I keep a pretty basket with all the bags and the hose and jar attachment, as well as a Sharpie (for marking the bags contents) and a pair of sissors - right there with the FoodSaver. I use it many times a day. I have my #4 FoodSaver in storage (I got it dirt-cheap at Tuesday Mornings 2 years ago) and it's completely different from the one I'm now using. Comments (36)We recently tried the Reynolds Handi-Vac ziploc bags that have the "port" for vacuuming out the air using the handheld battery operated appliance that sells for about $10. I like the smallness of the vacuum tool and the fact that I can take items out of the bag, rezip & reseal. What I don't like is that each bag takes a fairly long time to vacuum, holding down the button on the appliance the entire time it takes to vacuum, and sometimes a bag port takes some fiddling before the vacuuming happens. I will keep using it for things like frozen fruits & veggies. Based on this experience, last week I bought a FoodSaver system at Costco. DS recently hunted his first buck, & we had the venison processed into smoked "hunter" sticks, Italian style sausage, chorizo, & other meat items. I needed to repackage it all (for a new chest freezer) to prevent freezer burn & in more manageable quantities per bag. Clearly it would take forever using the Handi-vac system, and unfortunately a Handi-vac bag occasionally loses its vacuum. I'm very pleased with the FoodSaver, which has the space to store a roll, built-in cutter, and the vac-seal process is so easy, just one push of a button. The unit itself is fairly large, so I won't be keeping it out on the counter every day....See MoreLars
