I like the cabinets, but painting just the island might be nice... or the uppers as well.

I don't mind the center cabinet, and I think unloading that dishwasher with pretty everyday dishware right into that convenient cabinet would be very practical.

I'd probably want to change the backsplash, too, just for something fresher.

I would not paint the cabinets.

I'd want to live in the house for a bit before making choices on back splash and such. I'm inclined to think if it was my house I would remove that center cabinet.

I would paint the cabinets. I would also get rid of the panels on the fridge. You could hang artwork if you are getting rid of the glass cabinet. Could also run the backsplash up but that can get costly.

Don't paint the cabinets. You can change the glass in the cabinets to textured or frosted so you won't see what is in them.

Could you replace the see through glass with frosted glass so you could just store everyday things in there and wouldn't need to worry about them being seen?

I agree with others not to paint the cabinets. This is the 2nd dilemma I have read today that the floors and cabinets are the same color. Not sure why people do that it just looks like a sea of brown. Yes remove the window treatments and paint above them a lighter color. Get 2 stools for the island in a cream color (there is not room for 3). If the refrigerator is staying definitely remove the wood panels that just looks dumb sticking out like that. Panels are meant for flush mount. Taking the cabinet out between the windows will also lighten the dark look. Eventually, after living there for a while, you may want to change the backsplash.

I love white kitchens but I would wait for painting. Painting these professionally is quite expensive.

I would start by redoing the backsplash. Travertine is dated and this one simp,e change will fast forward this kitchen.

New window treatments will also be a good update.

I am a lover of painted cabs but would not paint yours. Agree with new window treatments and backsplash. If you do choose to remove the central cab I would put a large piece of art there.

They're pretty, but the rest of your trim throughout the open concept plan is white, so I think I'd want to match the cabinets to that. Then add your single color choice throughout the sitting room, TV area, dining room and kitchen. Here are my favorites for you.

Don't paint them.

First, I think the cabinets are gorgeous and are just poorly complimented with other design choices.

Next, a good paint job means a lot of prep and those cabinets are not easy to prep. There is a lot of detail in those doors and I would be suspicious that any cost effective option is going to be a deglosser plus shellac rather than sanding. Which can be an acceptable option when necessary, but you are trading a higher quality finish for a lower quality finish and spending a lot of money to do it.

I would change other colors around the room first.

Live in your kitchen for a while. Other household needs may pop up that your home inspection did not uncover. While living with your kitchen, determine if the layout works for you. Are there other things you'd change? Layout? Did appliances fail? I think your cabinets are pretty, and wood stained cabinets are trending... but it is a LOT of brown! I'm guessing the homeowners were a little afraid of color.

I'd remove the valances and window treatment on the door. I'd probably replace the barstools with something more updated. That's probably it until you are certain of what you want and you have the money to do it right the first time. Save, save, save your money, do your research and start building an ideabook of the look you're after before doing it piecemeal.
