Curled, crunchy leaves?
Comments (6)I'm in the hills north of Los Angeles, between the West Side and San Fernando Valley. The intensity of the sun and heavy transpiration rates have fried a lot of plants' foliage this summer, both here and in the Santa Clarita Valley where I tend several gardens. Even without causing extra water stress from increased salts from fertilizing and without any chemical sprays applied to the foliage, many have curled, brown, crisp fried leaves. I'm not seeing any evidence of miner damage, though. Perhaps if you took some clear, close up photos and posted them, it might help others to assist you in making proper diagnoses? If you've sprayed any chemicals; or used systemics during the extreme heat, particularly with insufficient water; fertilized with insufficient water or your foliage had too much standing water on it from sprinklers or your hose when the sun and heat were at their most intense, it is highly likely your foliage was encouraged to burn from water stress and high heat/sunlight. Without appropriate photos to illustrate the specific symptoms you're inquiring about, any other suggestions would be a shot in the dark. Kim...See MoreCurling leaves on new pomegrante tree
Comments (7)Just saw the late followup post on this thread dated May 2. Yes, actually I was way overwatering the poor thing. A few days since I posted this thread a lot of the leaves started turning yellow. It was made worse by the sudden heavy rains we were having. I tested the soil with my moisture tester and the needle was way off the scale it was that wet. I immidiately suspended watering until the moisture went back to normal and then experimented with the watering (and testing with the moisture meter daily) until I found a schedule that works. Currently it has 2 2GPH drippers and is watered for 10 min every 5 days. All the original flowers fell of including even the tiny buds. Thankfully with the watering issue fixed it has recovered - almost all the leaves are now green. Some of the yellow leaves fell off but it seems like many went back to green. I'm not sure that's possible but it seems like that. Now it has started flowering again. It has about 25 - 30 flowers - one has already opened up and most of the others are very close to doing so. It is looking very heathy right now....See MorePimiento Padron Peppers Leaf Curl/Yellowing
Comments (7)Thanks for the reply DMForcier! As for the fertilizer, which I only fed once, I mixed 1.5 tblspoon's in the top soil and watered. I always water(hose) just to the point that there is little seepage from the bottom holes of the pot. So I water an Inch or so and wait and see if there is any seepage, if not, I water a bit more. Water frequency, I would say it is every 2-3 days. If I wait more, the top of the plant, both leaves and stems start leaning. Happens most of the days that the sun is out but the plant is always happy in the morning. From all the readings, my first guess was calcium deficiency but I am also taking precautions if just in case I was over-watering. I have moved it on the deck yesterday morning with plans to cut the sun light to 5 hrs so that I can check on if over-watering is an issue. If I leave it at the spot where it was always, I will definitely have to water it every 2-3 days because of the top wilting. The picture shows where it was and it is south facing. Hope I am making the right moves. Other than a stop in growth for one of my tomatoes(cherry variety for containers) touch-wood, all my other plants are so far happy....See Morecurling & spreading leaves immediately after transplant
Comments (4)I have been trained to pot them into the smallest pot that they will fit into. I would have kept all together in one pot. I don't know if you are growing these in the house or out, and how cold is your temperatures, this will matter. I pot up approxmately 100+ flats a year 25 plants per flat. I also pot up our collection plants 6-8" pots we do this yearly, so we dont need fertilizer. We wait until they split their pot before doing it again. Now this is just the way we do it. It may not be right for you, this is meant to be a guide for those of you who have never done it before. We have extremely dry hot weather, so must water at once a week (100F) , and then fertilize afterwards. We use no peat moss. I also think you just gave them too much water, and that will kill them faster than anything else if they have not established their roots first. Ater they are separted from the mother plant we let them dry out often for a week before planting. By the way I also have only one plant from Germany which I am very proud of.
