Comments (1)Has this been a bad year for fruit growing in general? Apart from the peaches and nectarines with bad leaf curl(even though they had a thorough winter wash and copper fungacide spray in early spring)my victoria plum has leaf curl and lost all its fruit, and the pears and apples although looking healthy have only two apples and no pears. The only ones doing extremely well are the 3 grape vines which are as healthy as can be....See MoreMeyer Lemon Leaves turning yellow and new leaves curling
Comments (1)Looks like spider mites; you won't see them without a good magnifying glass. A good wash outside or in the shower will go a long way to getting rid of them. My advice... lose the fertilizer spikes and replace with a good soluble citrus fertilizer applied 3-4 times per year according to the label. Your tree looks to be a little underfed; and unhealthy trees are more susceptible to spider mites. I would also get a good foliar fert. and give your tree an application of that about every 15 days; I like Bayer Bayfolan Forte; lots of container growers here use Foliage Pro... there are others. Your tree looks a bit leggy; I am guessing it gets less light than it would like....See MoreLeaves curling up on orange trees
Comments (17)Once a week water to a young tree in Orinda is much too little. Unless of course your specific planting location is getting hydration from another source (i.e. from a neighbor's yard up the hill, adjacent sprinkler leak, etc). Echo above; check the hydration with a dowel/skewer. Also check the pH. EBMUD delivers very alkaline water to me here in Danville. I need to add vinegar to it so that the roots can absorb the food. [1 Tbsp per 1.5 gal watering can] You may have burnt the roots as i did 2 years ago. Too much fertilizer for the level of hydration. Be patient with the recovery. Forgo the solid fertilizer until next year; give it a weekly dose of the FP (and vinegar if needed). Good Luck! - George...See MoreMandarin Tree - Curled leaves with brown/dead tips
Comments (7)That tree needs some water. Looks like you have fertilizer tip burn to me, not that big of a deal. A newly planted tree should be getting watered almost daily, especially with the wind, high temps and ultra low humidity we’ve been seeing the last couple weeks. Once the weather cools down and you see your tree start to recover from the transplant shock you can back off on the watering and do it less frequently but for longer periods of time. Not sure if you have Drip Irrigation but that will help you a lot, then you can just set it to water on a regular schedule. As Susanne stated above, I would remove the stake that it’s tied to so the tree can sway in the wind and begin to build a thicker, stronger trunk. By the way, what kind of mandarin did you plant and do you know what rootstock it is on? Evan...See Moreblue_can
