What's the problem with your wood floors that you are replacing them?

The floors have gaps, water stains and scratches. They don’t look as nice as in picture. I was hoping wide plank flooring would update the look

McCarthy advice (above ) is best for your situation.

When was your ceiling last painted? Did someone smoke in the house? A new coat of white paint will brighten your space. Paint the walls a nice shade of white, too.

Keep and refinish your floors - they look great. White counters would also help.

Thank you for this sound advice. The floors did yellow and they are maple. We will look at refinishing. We are not the original owners so paint on ceiling is also good advice.
Since SJ Mcarthy mentioned lights. Any advice on that? Would black be too much? The adjoining rooms have black lighting.
And if I do white counters then appliances should be what finish?

Personally I like dark counter tops with your cabinets, which are very beautiful. I agree to refinish the floors, get black or stainless steel appliances, and soapstone or honed Jet Mist granite for counter tops. If you go with white counter tops, I'd go with a subtle white quartz (no garish veining), then change out the backsplash to a lighter tile, as in Design Girl's photo, or else the white counter tops will look odd as the only white finish. And definitely paint the walls and ceiling a lighter brighter color.

I’m also planning on painting the baseboards white. Is that a good idea ?

Have you looked into improving your lighting? You have very little ceiling lighting with the track fixture that is there. Adding additional recessed lighting and possibly a new fixture with under cabinet lighting will make a huge difference.
I would address the lighting and agree w painting the ceiling before you make any decisions about counters and backsplash.

New countertops, backsplash, lighting will go a long way. A nice rug for the floor - do not replace with vinyl. Remove that faux cabinet thing that goes across the window. Repaint the ceiling, remove the bottles on the top of the uppers, and revisit what you store on the countertop. The lazy Susan should be removed, and anything stored on the countertop should coordinate with the rest of the kitchen. It’s a nice kitchen with tons of storage!!!
