Lighter shade of SW 6149 Relaxed Khaki?

I am using SW 6149 Relaxed Khaki in my dining room above the chair rail with BM White Dove below on wainscoting and trim. I would like a slightly lighter shade for my living room and foyer. The next lighter strip color is SW 6148 Wool Skein but it appears to have a grey undertone in these areas which also gets more light than the dining room. Is it possible to get a custom mix of a lighter shade of Relaxed Khaki? How would I ask for this custom mix at the paint store?

SW 6155 Rice Grain. It’s approx. 7 points lighter than Relaxed Khaki, but very close in Hue Family neighbourhood.

I have blonde in my family room, but it gets plenty of light so it doesn't look very yellow there. And I have believable buff throughout my foyer & hallways as my neutral shade. It looks really nice w/ quietude (a blue shade) in my living & dining. I'm leaning toward nomadic desert for the basement. But hubby likes macadamia, which I think has too much green undertone. That killim beige color is apparently really popular, but it seems blah to me like soft tan.

Just to chime in again. I think I found one that might work: SW Ecru. It's one strip over from Blonde and while still having a main hue of yellow, it has more green in it than the Blonde. I got a sample and painted a foam board. On it's own it looks like a neutral yellow/beige, but against the Blonde I can really tell the difference. The Blonde definitely has more orange/gold in it. I'm trying Ecru out at different times of day and night and in different lights. So far, I like it. I considered Tobacco Road, but that is very similar to Whole Wheat and both have more gray in them than I was looking for. Still both are beautiful shades and very versatile. Thanks for your help.

I too have Ivoire in my entryway. It's a 2 story foyer and faces east so I get a lot of morning sun. I love that color. In the living room I have SW Wool Skein. A nice neutral but kind of bland and I want to change it. I have Relaxed Khaki in the master bedroom and I really like that color.

if your kitchen doesn't get much light, I wouldn't go with a light color. I'd go with a bolder color that compliments the cabinets, which would brighten up the room. How about a blue? Sherwin Williams Oceanside is deep, but it's a beautiful color; or Sw Santorini Blue It would also be a nice segue from the Spice Gold.

Sand Beach is approx 4 points lighter than Relaxed Khaki.

Thanks for your help Marylee! I have strips of those colors, but neither one of those work either. SW 6155 Rice Grain has more yellow undertones and the SW Sand Beach has a peachy undertone. Is it possible to have Relaxed Khahi mixed lighter and just have a shade or two lighter? If so, how do I ask for them to adjust the formula?

What you are perceiving as yellow ‘undertones’ are inherent to these colours.

They all belong to the Yellow Hue Family.

Hue - tells you where it sits in that Hue Family. (See the wheel above)

Value - tells how light or dark it is. The higher the value, the lighter the colour.

Chroma - the lower the number, the closer to neutral.

The higher the number = the more colourful a colour it is.

You are reading more peachiness in Sand Beach, as it sits over that bit nearer to the Yellow-Red Hue Family than the other two colours. In your lighting you are seeing peachy overtones. So you need a colour at the same position as Relaxed Khaki or further clockwise away from that zone.

Rice Grain you still read as too yellow, even though it has lower Chroma (colourfulness) than Relaxed Khaki. So you need a colour with even less Chroma than 1.67.

Trying to ‘just lighten’ Relaxed Khaki in store is a gamble. All the elements, not just the Value can alter. You might like the result and you might not. But you will have bought it then anyway,,,🤷🏼‍♀️

Do you want something as light in Value as Rice Grain or something between it and Relaxed Khaki in terms of Value?

Getting a custom mix could really be the last resort and only if such a colour as you hope for, doesn’t exist in any collection.

3 further alternatives which are lighter and less colourful than Relaxed Khaki.

The higher the Hue. = further away from the peachy zone.

The higher the Value = the lighter the colour.

The lower the Chroma = the less colourful it is.

As far as Value, probably something in between Relaxed Khahi and Rice Grain. I never knew so many factors determined the color and intensity! It’s strange to me that I don’t see the yellow in the Relaxed Khaki. Thank you for your assistance!

The last 4 colours all sit between Relaxed Khaki & Rice Grain in terms of Value.

The last 3 colours all have less Chroma than Rice Grain.

I would consider these before having a custom mix.

This method of comparison is just using the same data that paint companies use to conceive, make and match colours.

Until now, it hasn’t been too accessible to home-owners & designers.

Not perfect - but it sure beats comparing paint chip after paint chip, or just relying upon a shortlist of ‘go-to‘ colours.
