Creeping Charlie: recommendations for a good 2,4-D?
Comments (2)Ortho® Weed-B-Gon® Chickweed, Clover and Oxalis Killer for Lawns The Concentrate contains 8% Triclopyr . Timing is very important for a complete kill. The best time is late Autumn after the top growth on the lawn has stopped but before dormancy. The roots will be sucking up nutrients storing energy for winter dormancy. Hit your violets, charlie and other perennial weeds with the above herbicide according to the label instructions repeat after one week. Next Spring  No more violets, creeping C, or most other perennials that you treated. You can spray now, but you will only hurt the weed, not kill it, based on my experience. OtherÂs results may vary. Good luck with your weeds. Bill Hill Here is a link that might be useful: Ground Ivy Control...See MoreCreeping Charlie Suggestions...
Comments (2)Hi Kimmsr, Thanks for the Charlie post. I took a look at the "hot spots" today and can identify some of the problems right away. Some of the spots are definitely retaining more moisture than others, which is contributing to "my" charlie problems. Guess I need to cut back on watering certain areas. The other areas are cared for by my neighbor, who doesn't use organic methods. These areas are sunny, and the charlie is totally out of control. It's getting cut pretty regularly and pretty short, too. Sure that's contributing to growth. We've been working to up organic matter for the past several years, spreading compost and coffee grounds regularly. Soil is slightly basic, but not much. More and more worms every year. The yard is a mix of clay in one area and lots of sand. It's taking a lot of soil ammendments to get some good quality soil, but we're getting there. Thanks for the link, that's also good charlie info....See MoreCreeping Charlie
Comments (2)First be sure what you have is Creeping Charlie, "Glechoma hederacea", and then take a good look at the growing conditions. While this plant does much prefer shady, moist growing conditions it will do quite well in full sun and dry soils. What does a good reliable soil test say about the soil pH and nutrient balance? Some may tell you to spray with Borax, but as the article linked will tell you there is mixed results in control and Boron, an essential micro nutrient, can also poison other, more desirable plants in quite small amounts, Enough Borax to kill off Creeping Charlie can poison the soil for other plants for quite some time. Comments (25)Bindweed is a perennial weed. It grows from a corky tuber deep in the ground...I have only managed to find ONE of these and it was quite by accident. It spreads by underground shoots that pop up everywhere. The only real way to get of it is to pull, pull, and pull some more. Chemicals help...but they're not a cure all. I have read about a pest of this plant that they are experimenting with in the west called "Bindweed Gall Mite". Supposedly it controls it but it is still experimental and though offered in other states, it is not offered here yet. I can't wait until it is...LOL I have this C**P also.
