Anyone have some ditch lilies to share?

Hi All! I’ve been MIA for the past while, since I had my baby boy on March 15th! Between a new baby and canceling my parent-toddler classes due to the pandemic, my garden is SORELY neglected this year. The bindweed and the larkspur are conspiring to carry out a hostile takeover. However, the beauty of perennials is that they bloom whether you do your weeding or not.

Anyhow, I’m really enjoying my ditch lilies this year. And I’d love to have bunches more. I’m talking about those tall orange day lilies, I think they’re Hemerocallis fulva. I know they are very hardy, and wonder if anyone within an hour of Arvada has any that they‘d be willing to share? I’d be happy to bring you anything from my garden as well, I have tons of Shasta daisies, black eyed Susan, larkspur, raspberries, and if you want something less invasive I’ve got kniphofia (red hot pokers), Russian sage, day lilies “Stella d’oro,” and more.

Someone shared some tall lilies with me. I am meeting up with De Zi this weekend so they can be planted at the hill. Let me know if you are interested.

Congratulations on the Sprout! Very cute baby. Loved seeing your pictures also.

I had put in some gorgeous Larkspur but ended up taking it out as it is deadly to dogs. Might want to do some research on it's affect on humans. It appears to be a skin irritant if just touched and not ingested but is toxic if ingested.

My boy dog tends to go through the bed it was in with his mouth open sniffing around so I got worried. While there are many poisones plants that cause problems this one seemed to be more potent than most, causing death in dogs, with no known treatment.

Tiger lilies... Are they or aren't they ditch lilies?

In some parts of the country, some people call ditch lilies (Hemerocallis fulva) tiger lilies. Here in VA, what we call Tiger lily is Lilium tigrinum. And we call the Hemerocallis fulva-- wild daylilies, not ditch lilies. So it just depends on where you are, I guess :-)

Mmmm, I’ll have to look into the larkspur being poisonous. I wonder if there’s a certain type that is more potent than others? I touch mine ALL the time, pulling them out by the handful almost every time I do some weeding. I don’t use gloves, and I’ve never had a problem with skin irritation or respiratory issues from them.

Faith, that is good! I really hated to pull mine out but I got so worried about my dog. The vet places all warned against having it at all.

Faith, congrats on the new sprout. Sprouts like those are very rare and very precious! I think I saw some of the ditch lilies as you call them on Nextdoor recently. Someone in Arvada. I'll message you if I can find that source again.

Could you post a picture of what you consider "ditch lily" just so I'm sure? I can post on Nextdoor to ask if anyone has some. If you're not on Nextdoor, I highly recommend it especially for Arvada.
