I don't care for the look of your two tall pieces sharing the same area. In addition, if you properly hang drapes so they don't really cover the windows, there won't be room for the clock between them. The TV wall would be a good place for the clock, leaving the curio where the girls' pictures were. The trunks, lantern and TV all seem to line up like good soldiers. Can you try angling them gathered at the foot of the clock. I think the lantern might do better in place of the vase of dried stuff by the door., which I would eliminate entirely.

I would move your curio to where the luggage stacked and wall art is next to TV and move the luggage over To where the curio is now....so now you have some height across to other side of the room..most likely a 8x10 will be big enough so that just the front legs of you furniture rest on it and will really help ground your room. Your chairs have a lot of personality so adding a mix of ivory and light gret textured pillows will look very nice on the sofa and not fight with wall art over the sofa.

Home Interiors with Ease, next to TV is where I had the curio cabinet when I first started this discussion. So maybe I should move it back there? I have to keep it for my figurines as most of them were gifts from my kids and grandkids. So now I've moved the curio to the entrance hall but it makes for a tight spot for that walkway into that guest room and bathroom. I also moved the lantern over by the fireplace and going shop for some new stuff for the mantel. So the curio cabinet has to go next to TV or the tight spot in the entrance hall. I'm attaching the photos.

Next to TV..but move the TV over to the left a bit it is to close to the edge of the wall you only need about 12” between the two pieces of furniture...than you may think about some framed family photos over the TV. Where is the fireplace?

Home Interiors with Ease...Thank you. I moved the curio back next to TV and moved the two pieces closer together. The fireplace is in the corner on the long wall next to the sofa (opposite TV wall). Next is the grandfather clock. I can move it to the long wall behind the chairs but then you can't see the front of the clock from the room. You would only see the side. Otherwise, it has to stay between the two windows. There is no ideal spot for it. I had a much larger home before moving to this condo but wanted to keep some favorite pieces. Then I will shop for pillows and new stuff to set on the mantel and the coffee table. Also the rug. I may be too tired to shop today after moving all this stuff. I'm in my 70's. Thankful I can still do it though. Thanks for all your help.

I think your clock needs to stay where it is....I would remove everything from fireplace and add a mirror....how deep is the mantle?

Home Depot has a nice selection of rugs might be easy for you they ship it right to your house. Do you not want to do online shopping?

The mantle is only 9 inches deep. I already have a mirror in the entrance way which is basically the same room. Is it okay to have two mirrors? I don't have a problem with online shopping. I will definitely order the rug online as there aren't any rug stores near here. I think I can find pillows, vases, trays, etc locally. I will check the rugs at Home Depot. Mrs. Pete, I already moved the curio cabinet back to the TV wall. It just seemed too tight in the entrance way and I'm sure I would have bumped into it when coming out of those two rooms. Guess I've decided not to put anything over the TV right now. Still trying to decide on a rug. I appreciate your comments.

Nora..thanks for mantel info...oh it would be just fine to have a mirror over your fireplace with one in the entry over your console....mirrors are so nice and That way nothing will compete with what art you put over your sofas..I do think you need new art that really compliments your furniture...can the art over sofa be changed? You could do a round or Square mirror over the fireplace..if you have a piece of your chair fabric take it with you shopping....it will be very helpful when looking for new pillows..look for tweeds..linens...textured pillows if possible...no silk or shiny fabrics....I would move the candkesticks off the mantle and try them in the middle of your coffee table...are you replacing the coffee table? A large rectangle would look beautiful!

I like the idea of a mirror over the mantel. I have a beautiful oval mirror downstairs that I brought up last week but I decided it was probably too small so took it back to basement. I'm willing to replace the art over the sofa but I want to get the rug first. I can get rid of the candlesticks or maybe just use one or two of them. However, I don't think I can use them on the coffee table because I watch TV from that couch quite often and they would obstruct my view. I don't plan on replacing the coffee table unless I get a new sofa someday. So stuck with that table for now. So, if I get a mirror for the mantel, should I hang it lower than the metal art that's up there now?

Yes the mirror over fireplace should be much lower..maybe only 6-8” from mantle..when you have a chance post the width of that area above mantle side to side..and measure height from mantle straight up to middle of that slanted ceiling.😊

Also bigger than the round metal decor you have now...let me know what that size is too!

Well, if I have to have the furniture legs on the area rug, I guess I don't want one. After taping it off to see where everything would land, I didn't like it. My room is long but skinny, 24 ft. long but only 13'4" wide. Right now I have 4 feet behind the two recliner chairs that's not being utilized for anything but the grandfather clock. If I scoot my two chairs up to fit on the rug, there's even more wasted space back there plus it really narrows the walkway into the room from the entrance hall. I only wanted a rug under the coffee table for color which would mean a 6 x 9 rug. Plus, hardwood is easier to keep clean than carpets so I would like to have enough wood for a walkway from the front door to the kitchen. Saw some beautiful rugs and was getting excited about it until I taped off the rug size. So, if having the rug only under the coffee table is taboo I guess I can't get one.

These are just decorating opinions here, there is no hard and fast rule. It’s personal preference.

Many stunningly decorated homes throughout centuries have had rugs that didn’t go under the furniture. It depends on context and other factors.

It is your home and if you’d like a smaller rug, get a smaller rug. I showed a picture above with a smaller one, I think it looks very nice in the room, with a good balance and scale.

Your home is beautiful and you clearly have great taste. Do what makes you happy.

Ok Nora, so using that technique on rug size helped clarify what you want. That’s good. Another option you might consider is using a faux animal skin under your coffee table angled toward the sofa. That would ground the room and protect those amazing floors. Here are some ways to do that. Ignore style but see how this can work for you.

could you measure from the front of your set of chairs to the front of the big ottoman? I put a large rug under my coffee table that only includes the front legs of my sofas and have two chairs that are off the rug..you could ground the area under the two chairs with sofa and coffee table in front of the TV and not have the rug go under the big chair and ottoman......I still think 8x10 will work...

That is a great price and a nice rug. I also like these two rugs but didn't know how to link them so I just took pictures. They both have the 3 colors that are in my chairs in them, light gray, dark gray and beige. The Utari rug at Home Depot is an abstract so there's no real pattern but it picks up the colors. The Hillsby rug at Joss and Main is more traditional but the distressing gives it a muted look.

How about this Kathy Ireland rug that I found on Amazon. It's similar to the rug that Jinx attached below but a little cheaper. Is it too busy?

Also, what if I put the mirror that I have in the foyer over the mantel? I always thought it was a little big for that spot. I have a smaller oval mirror that I could probably use there. It's not round as you suggested but it's a nice mirror.

Any reviews on it? Let me look it up anything 100% polyprolene is very durable but they are not plush or thick same as the one from Home Depot...unless you want wool..but your budget is tight...do you want me to look for a couple wool options..thicker pile?

I love your grandfather clock! I agree a nice rug would be a good idea. I wouldn't out anything over the TV. The only thing I might add is a plant on top of the curio. Maybe a fern.

I had my son bring up an old rug that I had from my old house and guess I've decided that I really don't want a big rug. I just want a little color and I want to leave a walkway from the front door to the kitchen. So, I think I'm ordering the rug in this picture. The Kathy Ireland Moroccan Celebration KI-382 from Rugs Direct. It's not as busy as the other similar one I was looking at. However, if I don't like it, I have to pay for shipping back. Does anyone know what it would cost to ship the rug back?

I would go without rug rather than tiny rug. With the scale print on your chairs, any rug pattern has to be bigger or way smaller. That’s the trick to combining prints. An 8 x 10 can be positioned to leave wood walkway and look much better.

I have a friend who has a round rug under her coffee table by her couch that rug you have is too small or maybe her rug is starting to grow on me but I know your rug is too small

If you are worried about shipping costs for returns, find a rug you like on one of the websites that has free return shipping. There is surely something similar to the KI rug...esale rugs is one and rugs.com is another. Maybe others.

My room is long but narrow. If I do the 7'10" x 10"6" and place it a few inches under the couch, then the front legs of my end tables have one front leg on and one front leg off the rug which makes the tables lopsided. Also, when walking through the room you would have one foot on the rug and one foot off the rug which would be awkward. So then the next size rug is 9'3 x 12'9" which would solve the leg table problem but with the sofa and TV area would cause one corner of the rug to cover part of the fireplace hearth. Plus, it would almost completely cover my hardwood floor that I just paid $10,000 for last year. So, it's a rug under the coffee table only or no rug at all. The wayfair rug guideline does list having a rug under the coffee table only as an option for narrow rooms but now I'm thinking no rug at all.

Sometimes it is wise, if the rug comes in various sizes, to order the smallest rug available in your style/color; even a doormat version. That way you see the color, pattern and feel the texture and can decide. If you don't care for it, the smaller rug is cheaper to return. If you do, then order the bigger size and use the small rug as a doormat or sink area rug.

Decoenthusiaste...I did actually order two different rugs in the smaller size that I would need by my front door. One is the rug I like and has all the colors in my chairs but may be too busy. The other one is much plainer so may work with the chair pattern but I don't like it as much. When they come I can decide which I like best but it's still a dilemma on what size for the living room area. Right now, I'm leaning toward no rug there. Thanks for your input.

Just make sure it is 2-3 feet wider than the sofa, big enough to slip under the front 1/3 - 1/2 of the sofa and leave an open traffic path in front of the TV so you don't see wear on the trafficked side of it. Tape that out on the floor with painter's tape to get a feeling for it. If the taped out "rug" is not a standard size, go for the next standard size up from your taped rug, unless that would inhibit the traffic lane at the TV.
