Some new seedlings and one from last year.
Comments (8)Lisa - It's interesting to see the sibs from the Trahlyta and Laura Harwood cross. You can really see that Trahlyta influence in most of them. My favorite is the first seedling. I also love that last seedling you posted with the blue band. I would give it more time, too. It's really pretty! Debra...See MoreJust a few from the last few days.....
Comments (11)Debra: LTA is new this year so I don't know and these are the FFO's. I got it for the applique pattern it has. Want to try it with a few others to see what develops. BLUE EYED BUTTERFLY is very stunning and the blooms are always fantastic. A keeper for sure. Nancy: This is the second seedling bed I've done and the ones planted last year in a backyard holding bed need to get moved at the end of the season to their new home. I wonder if I'll have the energy to actually do it LOL. CERISE MASTERPIECE took me by surprise as I thought it wouldn't open with the cooler morning we had yesterday. WILD SUMMER WIND is just a fantastic orange color for an early/mid bloom. One similar is SOMBRERO WAY which is a late bloomer so now I will always have some bright orange in the garden during bloom season. Thank you all for the comments. Comments (2)Steve, it sounds like those Sungold are worth it. I have seeds, but have yet to grow. I am a relatively new gardener, only 5 seasons in, so I don't have any tried and true "staples" yet. I grew cherry/grape varieties for the first 3, but I find that we can't keep up with even one plant as much as we love the fruits. I will say I love yellow crookneck squash. I've tried growing it for 4/5 seasons and when it does well it's one of my all-time faves. When it doesn't, neither does any other type, so I know it's not the variety. I think it'll always be a part of the garden and I'm sort of surprised, as I was never a huge fan of squash before I started growing my own. I think I'll go another season or 4 before beginning to settle on must-have tomato varieties. I usually pick 2-3 of the best performers from each season and attempt to grow them again the following season. This has had mixed results, as I've not grown any one variety for more than two seasons. This was supposed to be season 3 for Stump of the World, but the one transplant I had was weak and did not make it. It performed exceptionally well in both 2015 and 2016. Krasnodar Titans and Yaqui are quickly becoming favorites for fresh pico/salsa as they are both very dense and meaty with little juice; the KT will keep ripe on the counter for over a week due it's thicker skin. I grew them in 2016 and again this season and both are producing beautifully. I will have them in the garden again next season, multiples of each. I'm growing ground cherries for the first time this season, sort of on a whim, and they are a ton of fun. They are beautiful plants, produce tons of little fruits and are unique and delicious. I've given them little care (sometimes less is more) and they are thriving. I wish our climate would allow it to be perennial, but for now I plan to grow it again in 2018....See MoreA Few New Seedlings
Comments (10)kay - I've grown to like that Skin of My Teeth baby. At fiirst I was very disappointed with that one because it wasn't a dark purple with a white edge. But with each bloom, I'm coming to appreciate it more and more. The Barbara Mandrell baby pleased me with the first bloom because it had such a heavy gold edge. But as you can see, that goes away when the heat does. Carolina Cool Down #1 has very clean lavender color, and I got a kick out for the very tiny teeth on the edge. Kate - The CC x Julia Newmar cross has yielded the good, the bad, and the ugly. I was sure the first one that scaped last year was going to be fantastic. It had four-way branching and a ton of buds. Then it opened to the ugliest brown flower you've ever seen. The second one had a pretty good plant habit, but had a blah flower. This one was had the smallest and not a lot of buds, but the flower is quite pleasing. I like the clean petal color and the lavender eye. The teeth on the edge make it a good candidate to cross with my other semi-toothy seedlings. Debra...See Morelilykate7a
